They do a great job in the setup here, but of course the show and the actors will determine the quality of the evening. We saw "Lines in the Dust," an outstanding new drama by Nikkole Salter. Go online to see a synopsis but our foursome thought it was outstanding and worthy of going to New York for an extended run. The theatre is small and that enhances the evening. Sitting 10 feet from the actors (and watching the tears run down the face during an especially emotional scene) really adds greatly to your enjoyment.
We often go to NYC to attend theater. However, most of Luna's productions are equal and occasionally better than those in the City. The very capable director, Sheryl, chooses interesting and varied types of shows and the talent of the actors constantly amazes us. Another great feature is the readings often put on there. If you enjoy good theater and live in the West Orange, NJ area, do yourself a favor and check out their website!
Recently went to "Master Harold and The Boys" show at Luna. An excellent production of the Athol Fugard play set in South Africa on the 1960's. The cast was excellent and the production very good (I have to admit that the script itself was not overly exciting). The Luna theatre as very small but they are innovative in positioning the "stage" and seating - can seat up to 120, maybe. I have seen several shows there, including standup comedy nights. The Luna usually gets very good talent for their plays, not so good for the standup nights. The prices are very inexpensive so no matter what you see, you definitely get your money's worth. Parking is on the street and usually pretty easy. No place to eat nearby so plan to eat out somewhere else (if you are planning an entire evening).
I have been to the Luna Stage many times. I have seen shows, comedy, and stage readings. The performances have ranged from very good to poor, but the productions have always been very good. The most recent performance was the show Master Harold and the Boys by Athol Fugard. It was very good and the performances by the actors was outstanding - truly impressive whether in a local theatre or on Broadway. Theatre is small and layout is adjusted depending on what the production is. Parking is on the street and usually pretty easy to get close. There are no decent restaurants nearby so plan dinner somewhere else.
