Sadly we went to this at the wrong time of year so a bit of an unfair review. But I think it's worth mentioning that it's probably a good idea to check their website ahead and go when they have classes or workshops. Very nice woman did a bit of an intro of what they do at the site. I think summer and fall is best time to visit and I imagine it would be a fun time.
Would definitely return in future. Be sure to book motel in advance since this whole area gets SOLD out of rooms during summer months. CREATIVE place and very inspirational.
A historic and important institution run by wonderful people who give artists time and space to do creative work. Be sure to stop by the gallery and store too!
A very beautiful setting along the shore of Lake Superior. A cozy little town with the tourists in mind. Since I don't buy art any more we went for the food. And it was terrific.
This is a working art studio and on the Saturday I visited, classes were going on and there were several painters on the grounds outside. They have some art for sale in the gift shop which I thought was very reasonably priced and helps support the studio. Well worth the walk up the hill from Main street and you should walk over to Betsy Bowen's studio as well. Both are old churches and offer some great art.
Many small shops to peruse. Visit art galleries, great restaurants, and fun shops. Ate the BEST smoked fish since starting the Circle Tour.
Where will you find the oldest art colony in Minnesota. With more artist per capita than any other county in MN, Grand Marais is Minnesotas version of Carmel by the Sea. Whether your artistic interest lie with photography, painting, fabric, music, sculpture, ceramics, stain glass, lithography..... and more.... Grand Marais art colony is there to support you. Add to this north shore treasure the North House Folk School and you have one of the most diversified art curriculums in the nation.
This was a neat little stop in Grand Marais. There were many interesting pieces in a variety of mediums. I didn't purchase anything, but I would recommend checking it out.
I've traveled to Grand Marais many times; as this little town by itself is so inspiring. Classes at the Colony are really fun. The last class I took there was a five day drawing workshop. It was a blast. The Colony folks are very personable, the fees reasonable and instructors are excellent. I believe they assert quite a bit of quality assurance in arranging for and scheduling these classes. The Colony's mission also supports the arts and there are far too few of these types of organizations around. The staff was so accommodating that they even offered keys for the "late night" artists, so we could let ourselves in should we have some inspirations after hours.
My wife (an artist/writer/etc.) signed up for a Writing Workshop on the two days before we headed up the Gunflint Trail. She was very pleased to have been part of the group of eight, and appreciated the facilitator, Peter Blau..The experience was both informative and inspiring for her. She hopes to take advantage of other offerings at the Grand Marais Art Colony.
The Art Colony in Grand Marais has many wonderful classes, some are demonstrations of an hour which are very inexpensive. I watched a paper making demo while having a boxed lunch there, for instance. There are free art shows. The classes vary in cost but many are offered at a reasonable rate. The Empty Bowls programs is very low cost and helps the community.
Wonderful people. I went to Grand Marais for a plein air paint out hosted by the Art Colony. They did an exceptional job hosting and providing information. The art show was great.
Attended an artist in residence talk, it was wonderful to see the artist process and the discuss the direction the creativity was taking. There are numerous classes, art shows occur often, some art sales. A historic space in a lovely small town. Visit their website for details of all events.
Their Arts Center is cool. I haven't taken any classes there so I can't speak to that. What I can say is that they put on a fabulous art show in Grand Marais in July. The show is filled with really good artists. They run an organized and professional show. And, they treat the artists who are in the show SO well! Very friendly and accommodating as well.
Well run art centre offering a wide variety of workshops.
