A real "soda jerk" was working the day were stopped and created a fabulous ice-cream soda that was very tasty! She was so friendly and a joy to visit with.

our road trip theme was "dogs, diners, and dives". we chose to travel through the heartland of America this time with our dogs, and eat hot dogs anywhere, at local diners or anywhere, and check out dive bars from south Carolina to our Montana summer home. we almost missed this spot and threw the dogs out the window to turn off to go here. no traffic lights, and a very quiet downtown. no cars around except for a few in front of Stoner Drug. think 1970's or earlier. these were decent hot dogs (my hubbie burned his mouth on the microwaved dog, but mine was fine). i like the bag of lays chips they include. shortly after we sat at the stools, an older gentleman came in, (and i am guessing after viewing our out of state license plates), sat down next to us, and said "You must be the folks from Montana". guess that memo goes out pretty quickly for 'stranger alert'. friendly, quiet, retro soda fountain with nothing fancy, but a place to sign the guest book, and depending on who waits on you, a complimentary pill box, with their name on it. We kept them to prove to our peeps that your can get a dog in hamburg.

I stopped here when passing through Hamburg the other day and had a cherry Coke. It's a real old-time soda fountain.

Stoner Drug is an old fashioned soda fountain that serves Blue Bunny ice cream. The ice cream is limited to 5 or 6 flavors which you can then have made into sundaes, floats, malts, and shakes. The positives - very friendly service, old-time feel with the soda fountain in the back of the drug store, pretty good tasting. The negatives - they don't have bananas so no banana splits; they won't make a malt/shake with hot fudge as it makes too much trouble to clean the machine, no butterscotch, pricing - two sundaes were $8.50.

A wonderful old drug store and they still have the old soda fountain. You have to try the fried egg sundae. Take time to buy your Hamburg ,IA keepsakes and enjoy this establisment that has been around scince the 1890's.

I love to show up here for a coke float or a cup of coffee. A real flash back to the good ole days. My daughter in law loved to mug, as well.
