Sandpoint lies on the shores of Idaho's largest lake, 43-mile-long Lake Pend Oreille, and is surrounded by three major mountain ranges, the Selkirk, Cabinet and Bitterroot ranges. Unfortunately this town needs more tourists, as it's largest employer, Coldwater Creek, is out of business.
We stayed in a lovely condo on the lake, called Pend Oreille at Pend Oreille Shores Resort. Our unit over looked the lake,we had a big balcony with comfortable chairs to sit in and enjoy the view.We were 16miles from Sand Point a nice sized city with lot of fun shops and lot of restaurants. The Trinity located in the Best Western on the lake was very good, we had fish and chips that were just great .Jalapeno's Mexican Restaurant was fun as we went there on Cinco de Mayo May 5 Big MexicanFun Holiday. We are from Calif. And Cinco de Mayo is big in Calif. On Sunday we went for a brunch on the Floating Restaurant by our resort, it was nice sitting on the water looking at boats and the food was all home made very good.I guess I should say something about out our unit it was lovely; large rooms,2bed/2bth. Big kitchen well stocked we cooked breakfast ever day, lunch and dinner out.The beauty of the mountains/lake and FRESH AIR was the best ever.Coeur D Alene was 50 miles away we went there 3 times for site seeing/shopping.It is a large city with it's own lake. The weather was in high 50/low 60's rain at night and in the morning then sunny in the day.We were there the frist week in May a head of the crowds just GORGEOUS. GO I SAY GO!The people at the resort were very nice they had things you could there, but we went out and about every day.Just to Beautiful not to go out and ENJOY THE BEAUTY.
We absolutely love this campground!! It offers lots of shade and the views are amazing! Dry camping at its best. It's rocky so make sure you wear shoes for it. Makes it a lot easier to go in. Best to call ahead and make a reservation. We are from British Columbia and love making the trip here.
This lake is gorgeous. We were looking at real estate and boy oh boy is the waterfront expensive! We will continue to go back through summers and enjoy the Sandpoint & surrounding areas and the beautiful lake. One of these days we will find the property to be our "Golden Pond"
Nice deep lake for all summer activities. Water is nice temperature at the end of July/beginning of August.. City Beach in Sandpoint and Springy Point Recreational area is a nice place to spend the day.
Gorgeous lake.....but you should try other lakes first (so we can have this to ourselves!). Warm, huge, clean and beautiful
Clean warm lake that is really underused and excellent for boating and swimming! I was shocked to see how few boats were on the water on a Saturday afternoon. The road around the lake from sandpoint to the vacation houses is very narrow and tight so we were glad we scoped out the road in just our vehicle before towing the boats all the way down the road only to learn the road was too tight to get the boat down! We launched at Sanpoint public launch and boated into the vacation rental. There's also great day docks in Sandpoint for tying up to when shopping or grabbing a coffee at Starbucks!
Lake Pend Oreille (locally pronounced pon-da-ray) is one of the largest and most scenic inland lakes in the Northwest and reaches some 1,200 feet deep. Great recreation area for all types of watersports. The town of Sandpoint rests upon its shores and offers great dining, is a artists community, and for women interested in casual fashion, it is the home to Coldwater Creek clothiers. As a historical note, the lake was a naval training station during World War II, and where the US Navy prepared crews for nuclear submarine service. Another winter's landmark is nearby Schwitzer Mountain Ski Resort. In this area one can ski almost yearround.
Come see for your self the grandure of this lake. A little annoying that there are "No Tresspassing " signs hanging everywhere, but I guess some folks wander onto other folks property and bother them. Sandpoint is the Town on the lake and is just as charming as can be. Bring your bicycle!
We boat hear all summer. Size makes it mainly uncrowded and their are many launch sites. The main beach in Sandpoint is beautiful and popular.(somewhat crowded) Water is clear and quite cold. Fishing is marginal. Some really nice resorts. Check out Hope and Dover Bay
My family has a house here and it is the most peaceful place in the world. There is nothing like spending time here to unwind.
We visited Farragut State park and Pend Oreille lake last summer and we foresee a summer vacation there every year! The weather was great, lake was beautiful! We water skiied many days and always found calm water. Most days you could find glass clear in the middle of the day. We just returned from a trip to Mexico and what does my husband say when get back..."I can't wait to go back to lake Pend Oreille this summer." Yes that good.
Love the views from Faragut State Park across the lake to the mountains rising out of the water. Sometimes you can see mountain goats over there.
The sheer expanse of water, surrounded by tree covered hills; the air alone is worth the trip. I don't have a favorite season: they're all full of more activities and events than I can stand, and the spiritual aura which surrounds the Lake never fails me.
The other water vessels on the water/the friendly people/public boat lauches/floating restaurants/camp sites/public parks/many various friendly people/the Lake itself.
