This has to be the most hospital museum I've been to. The first time came here during field trials, they fed me and gave me a beer, the second time I came just as the museum closed and they opened it up. More than the variety of bird dogs that have been quail dogs and their owners and trainers. The museum has section for retrievers too. It recalls history of field trials from the 1800's. Some of the artwork is good and the museum has traditional firearms. It's worth the stop in a beautiful area of the region. The staff can share stories of the famous dogs and the characters, rich and humble, that trained them. The museum was created by the community that loved the sport. If you love dogs or have fond memories hunting, it will put you in a good mood.
The people of this community are very proud of their distinction as the Bird Dog Capitol. The museum is housed and maintained by the locals and was a fresh and unexpected surprise. Never knew there was so much I didn't know about bird dogs.
If you have ever owned and hunted with bird dogs, this this place is a must for a visit. I visited while on a motorcycle ride and am glad that I did. I have owned setters and pointers in the past and this brought back fond memories of hunting quail with dogs.
As a retriever fan this museum was superb. The staff is friendly and the retriever hall of fame was fantastic. Make this a must stop on your next trip. If you can't visit check out the online gift shop.
Spent over an hour here with our out of town relatives. They had heard of birddogs but had no idea of the culture of bird dogs and the sport. The museum is beautiful, and much larger than might be anticipated from the outside. It was a blessing to have such a cool spot after exploring Ames on a hot day, and it is clean and we were met by 3 different employees with suggestions and offerings to guide us. David Smith is a gem, so knowledgeable and generous with his time. Our visitors said, after we left, that they didn't know they were going to get the "VIP Treatment" and I explained that was the way I had always been treated there. Wonderful Experience! I will take future visitors there any time I get the opportunity!
This place is full of history and fantastic art work. It is very cool and tastefully laid out. All in All it was a very pleasant surprise!
