It's small, intimate and well thought out. I'd rate it higher is the chairs were even close to comfortable and if the heat worked. Being uncomfortable isn't a good way to enjoy a good performance.
If you have never been to the Down Home in JC, I have one suggestion. GO! I have been to concerts throughout the south and If you can catch a good performer on a weekend night at the Down Home, you are seeing live music at its best. It is the most intimate room I have ever watched a concert in and have always found the staff to be welcoming and helpful. Everything is small, stage, seating, bathrooms, bar, etc. but it only adds to the experience. I recently attended a Saturday night performance by Scott Miller and there were people outside begging for tickets. The place was packed and it is really a special experience.
Food was nothing but snack stuff, chips and canned cheese goo. Ventilation poor. Cozy and hot! Wait staff overwhelmed but kind. Very good acoustics. Go early-stay late. Venue 3 stars, The Boxcars 5+ stars! Need to improve food if possible.
We got to see a group called "The Boxcars". The place was packed and they were turning away people at the door. We were told to get tickets before the concert and this was a great idea. The room was not fancy but the sound system was grand. The group got started on time and played two fine sets. They were entertaining and the crowd was into the experience. The other couple we were with have attended over 200 concerts and they placed this palce and this concert in the "top 5". We will be visiting "Down Home" again soon and if you ever have the chance you should do the same.
