This museum is old but they have a lot of interesting things. I remember the big polar bear from my 2nd grade field trip. My 8 year old niece loves the dollhouse. She always wants to go immediately there, and never leave. On the way out she will stop by the music room to play on the piano and sing a little song.
Visited on a Sunday with the whole family and was positively surprised. Museum is located in an old school and former classrooms were adapted. Very friendly staff and exhibits very well made and interesting for every family member. The history of Oakridge (Manhattan Project) was a surprising experience.I highly recommend the train exhibits and the model train displays which are very well made. Overall a great place to visit.
The giant polar bear at the entrance both fascinated and frightened my very brave and curious 2 year old. Where else have I been able to try out a rope bed? Nowhere. The enormous doll house made us all very happy. And the model train exhibit was amazing. This converted grade school still has some of the original fixtures in the restroom, adding to the charm of the museum. There is so much to see and do that we could have used most of a day. Definitely a repeat.
It was a lovely day & we decided to take a walk. We started with a walk to the International Friendship Bell park & walked the mile and a half up the hill to the Children's Museum. The welcome alone from the staff (Joy) was worth the hike. The museum itself was an eclectic mix of displays and I got to see many of the toys I played with as a child, especially my Lady Alexander dolls. Also enjoyed the history of black women in America. I had actually met two of the women in my earlier years. My friend enjoyed the exhibits as welcome, especially the old schoolroom desks. All the exhibits oozed with the warmth, care and effort of volunteers that keep this "children's" place afloat. Definitely a worthy endeavor for the Oak Ridge community.
From the Amazon to Appalachia, and just about everything else in between, the Children’s Museum offers something for everyone regardless of their age. Starting with the huge stuffed polar bear rearing up on its hind legs by the ticket counter, visitors are treated to such displays as a particularly well-done exhibit on Appalachian life (complete with log cabins), a section on Native American culture, a nature exhibit, and a representation of a tropical rain forest, among many others. A walk-though dollhouse and a large model train set will keep kids of all ages – including adults – entertained. Also featuring hands-on displays, workshops, and classes, this museum is the perfect way to get kids to explore the real world that lies just beyond the latest electronic device in which their heads are too often buried.
Kids under 10 would probably enjoy this museum the most. The kid sized doll house was a huge hit! Great educational and interactive displays. I think even the adults learned something! You can easily spend the day here and money is well spent!
Took my granddaughter and had a great time. I didn't know there was so much to do. I will have to go back and allow more time (especially now there are two granddaughters!).
Great fun for the kids. A nice playground is adjacent to the building for some activity after the museum.
Took my nieces here on a rainy day. I wasn't sure if they would have fun or not since they are both under the age of 5. Both of them had such a good time. The museum has wonderful exhibits and different interactive tools that are educational but fun for the kids to checkout. I enjoyed myself as well-- so it's not just for kids.
I have to admit, I was EXTREMELY skeptical about this place. It's in a residential neighborhood (turns out it was an old school at one time). I was beyond impressed! Not only is this a "hands on" type museum, but there was SO MANY interesting things here! We had a blast! I have to say our favorite part was the life size dollhouse. It was the coolest thing.... my kids (age 5 and 2) had a great time. They have an amazing military discount for those in the military as well. All I can say is..... GO HERE! It's a great thing to do with the kids. And it was interesting for us adults too!
Wonderful visit for a day trip. The kids love it, there was so much to do and see. There is a HUGE life size doll house you can walk around it, it's SO much fun for grown up girls lol. The train exhibit is amazing and you can actually watch the artist working on the exhibit. Price is good also.
This museum is housed in a former school and has space for some very large exhibits, including a kid-sized dollhouse, tugboat water room, rainforest room, puppet room, and train exhibition. There are also craft rooms and a fascinating display of Appalachian artifacts complete with log cabin. Our family enjoyed their new exhibition, the Living Light House, a modular home powered by solar energy, which teaches kids about renewable energy. Overall, families will really enjoy all this museum offers!
This place will keep your kids entertains for hours. Very well done, and the price is reasonable. Many interesting interactive exhibits for the kids, and informative exhibits for the adults also. We have seen better children's museum, Nashville's for example, but Oak Ridge's is very good... very well done.
