This monument was built by soldier's who survived the bloody massacre that was the Battle of Stone River around New Year's 1863. Interestingly, it was built just 6 months after the battle, when the how the war would end was far from certain and fighting still raged on. It's a small modest cemetery and cairn but worth seeing for the simple fact that it was built by soldier's who were still fighting to memorialize their fallen comrades.
It is wonderful to see tribute being paid to those who bravely shaped the course of American history. The monument is located just to the south of the entrance to the National cemetery and battlefield. The historical markers surrounding the memorial were enlightening and poignantly informative. Without these tributes, I may have never learned about some of our heros of decades past.
Great monument honoring Col. William B. Hazen's brigade and the 45 men who died there. Pro tip - you can go thru the gate in the wall that surrounds the monument to examine the monument more closely.
