While in Craig seen a sign for this museum. While the ladies wandered the multiple floors of exhibits my son and I spent over an hour in the gun, knife, handcuff, and spur room. These items are what every boy dreams of playing cowboys and Indians. Their collection is huge and actually has some very rare pieces. If you are nearby with kids who have daydreamed of being a cowboy in the old west, swing by and watch the stars in their eyes explode.
You will need about 2 good hours to really see everything. EXCELLENT collections. Down town area. Visit the city park across the street and see the wonderful wood carvings through out the park.
I liked the old west gun display upstairs and the friendly staff. Dan Davidson and Jan Gerber have lot of local history to share.
We always stop and see what is new at the museum. Dan and the staff do a wonderful job of keeping things fresh and interesting. We visited the old west gunfighter's room. We were planning on visiting the museum in Cody and this was a great place to start. One of the staff gave us a lot of insight into the guy that started the museum in Cody. Make time to visit this "treasure" even if you live in Craig.
wife and I visited on a 4 State road trip. The museum does a nice job of explaining some of the history of this part of Colorado.I really liked the railroad models on the 2nd floor. We used the old time elevator with a gate to reach all 3 floors. The bathrooms are in the basement and chronicle the high school classes of Craig for the past 100 years.
We found this museum a very interesting place to visit in Craig, CO. There is a wide variety of artifacts on display. We were also very glad that this museum has free admission.
What do Buster Brown, western gunfighters and antiques have in common? They all can be found in this delightful and low-key museum. When in Craig, it is a must see
For a local museum, this one was well organized to tell the stories of the city and local area. Good sections on railroads, fire department, and cowboys, somewhat weak on mining. Also the museum is a block south of where the tourists map locates it.
We didn't visit the museum but close by is a park that is worth a visit. The park is full of trees that have been carved into amazing sculptures. We even had a deer walk through while we were taking pictures. Very much worth the time to walk through the park.
don't miss this museum in Craig! It's packed full of things to see! Lots of local and territorial history here!
We just visited the museum. There was a lot of fun things to see. My kids really enjoyed the cowboy and gun exhibit! It's free, so check it out!
The Norman Rockwell magazine cover exhibit was great, I'm looking forward to seeing the "Snowflake Exhibit" this weekend.
The best part of this museum for us was the cowboy collection - losts of saddles, spurs, history, etc. At the time they also had a Norman Rockwell exhibit as part of their changing exhibits - see what's new when you go...The first floor is dedicated to western history with the cowboy collection on the second floor. We were staying in Steamboat Springs, and this is about 40 miles west of there - a nice day tip.
Found this little gem of a museum off the highway-almost missed it. Didn't know that a fabulous exhibit of Norman Rockwell art was there until Sept. 2012. What a great surprise to find quality artwork in the middle of nowhere! Other wonderful quirky items related to the Old West as well. Something for all ages to enjoy.
This interesting museum is well maintained and has an excellent selection of Cowboy/Western firearms on display. The main floor is devoted to the area’s rich history and has several interesting pieces, including a vintage fire engine and fine antiques. The staff was knowledgeable as well as helpful. This small museum is well worth a visit for anyone interested in the history of the West and in Cowboy culture. Close by is a small shady park that makes a great picnic venue as well.
