ouray box canyon waterfall

It's beautiful in winter as it is turned into an ice park. It was great watching and talking to the people who were climbing up the waterfalls of ice.

The falls and canyon are a slightly hidden gem and well worth seeking out. One definitely gets a sense of how canyons are formed from watching the water rush into the narrow canyon. Its fun to hike up to the bridge over it, but not essential. The best part is experiencing being in the narrow-walled canyon, right IN the town.

Located at the end of the Million Dollar Highway (which runs from Durango to Ouray), Box Canyon is not to be missed -- absolutely SPECTACULAR scenery and the thundering sound of the waterfall (esp. during spring/summer runoff) makes the earth thunder beneath your feet. This waterfall is a phenomenon not to be missed! :)

Can see it as never before from the new walkway. It is kind of a thrill standing on the observatory, suspended above the river.

Thank you to those who designed bridge from the top of the mountain & the walkways down into the canyon where visitors can experience the river crashing into a narrow channel. We have never seen anything like this in our travels! Its too bad we missed the swifts who nest in the misty canyon as they are only there from the spring to summer months. The surrounding park is an fairly easy hike worth exploring with chatty squirrels, bluejays and a variety of other birds.The ticket counter park attendants were very friendly and helpful. Definitely not to be missed if you are in Ouray.

Bring your hiking shoes and get ready for a great hike. There is a very inexpensive fee for the park , ( I think it was like $4) but then you get to see waterfalls, climb the stairs and see how these miners did it and go through a tunnel. There are two different hikes and you can see the waterfall from the bottom and all the way from the top. The top serves for a great picture area. We went the week of the 20th of september and the leaves were changing beautiful colors. Great family or couple hike. There were chipmunks running around towards the entrance and in the winter time this is were they do the ice climbing. Great low cost fun adventure.

Having grown up in Western Colorado, I've been to Box Canyons an infinite number of times and the beauty and majesty never fail to impress me. It is beautiful at every time of the year. During winter months, you can watch ice climbers. Summer is best to hike if you have elderly or very young travel companions who may require sure footing.

Wow. Don't miss this. The beauty and the feel of the water power are really neat to experience. It takes your breath away.

It is a must see in Ouray. It was so gorgeous. The hike to the top is worth it. It was pretty easy, even for someone out of shape like me.

We love visiting Ouray and checking out the falls. It is a nice walk down and then you can take the stairs to the bottom.

Perfect for the family! It will cost $ to go. We always enjoy this hike with our six year old but be prepared to get a little wet at the top of the waterfall! A lot of tourists.

A great way to view the falls is from hiking the Perimeter Trail which I highly recommend. 4.2 miles hike that goes along the edge of town. Very scenic!

We decided to hike to the falls in the evening and were the only ones. It was fantastic and you can just hear the power of the falls circulating through the air. It was beautiful and breathtaking and we were so happy we chose to take this little side adventure!!!!!

This is a wonderful place to hike. We hiked the lower and upper trails. You can see a gorgeous view of Ouray from the upper trail , especially after you walk over a bridge and through a tunnel. Take water and lip balm with you.
