I thoroughly enjoyed the cross country ski trails at Vail. It was only my third time doing this sport and it is great exercise. The trails were groomed along the sides but no tracks were present in the middle. Cost not nearly as outrageous as a lift ticket for downhill skiing at Vail so you don't feel like you need to ski a full day to get your dollars worth. The rental boots were very comfortable and bindings fairly simple to figure out. The staff was extremely friendly and nice.I highly recommend this activity even for those who have never done it before.
This is a great place to go if you want to learn or do some cross-country skiing... I had never been and the instruction was excellent and I liked being on the golf course.. Bus stops right in front and staff all very accommodating. I highly recommend if you want to try something different in Vail...
I finally had an opportunity to try cross-country skiing on our just-completed family vacation at Vail. While the grandkids were in ski-school I took my five adult family members to the Nordic Center at Golden Peak. I had already had a great phone conversation with Joe, the director, because my group included my wife, daughter, and daughter-in-law. Our original plan was for an all-day lesson but when the women heard that they'd have to pee in the woods we switched to a half-day lesson which lasts three hours and the ladies figured their holding tanks would last(they did!) for that short time. Joe assigned Dara as our guide and she was fantastic--instant rapport based on her gender and gentle personality coupled with vast knowledge and infinite patience. For our lesson she drove us 15 minutes to Maloit Park in nearby Minturn where the Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy is located. We used their professionally groomed trails including a flat area for the basics followed by some gentle hills to practice on. It was a delight. Dara provided granola bars and water( which we drank sparingly for obvious reasons). The equipment needed consisted of skis, poles, and boots, all of which looked new and came with the lesson. It was a beautiful day and we all had a great time. I'll definitely go back for more classes and touring.
No one in our family has every cross-country skied before but they made it very easy to strap on some skis and try it out. The people there were very helpful it was loads of fun.
My wife and I had never cross-country skied before so we signed up for a lesson here. Stephanie was our instructor and she did a great job teaching us some very important fundamentals and getting us out on the course to practice our new found skills. She was very patient, encouraging and kept the learning very fun. There is plenty of trail to explore and this place is great for beginners because the course overlays a golf course and has a lot of flat terrain. The rates for skiing, lessons and equipment rental are quite reasonable. They have plenty of good quality rental equipment and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Very happy we stopped here and look forward to our next visit.
The snow thickness is less than Breckenridge for instance during the Thanksgiving week. Easy location to find, just off of the interstate. Not crowded if you arrive early. Equipment is of good quality and the value is good for what you pay. You are on your own and need to have some experience if you wander off of the flat beginner 800 meter loop. If you veer off of the hill section, you will end up in the river. Watch your footing on the bridges if you are a novice. Not a bad experience overall and the staff is certainly friendly.
The Vail bus from the transportation center is a quick ride out to the nordic center. I took my own snowshoes, however you can rent them there. The trail is well groomed and a peace place to be (once your tune the I-70 in the distance out). If you what to spend a little more energy step to the side of the groomers into the deeper snow and burn some more calories!
