Fovea is dedicated to exhibiting politically and/or socially significant photography. This alone makes it a stand-out, since so much art in galleries today aims at a high-end market, which tends to discourage work that challenges the status quo. Their current exhibit, the first in their new location across the street from their previous digs, features Australian photojournalist Daniel Berehulak, often published in the New York Times, most recently covering the ebola outbreak. His exhibit at Fovea, "Braving Ebola," consists of a series of portraits of health workers and survivors of the epidemic, which he photographed against a white background that he managed to rig up in the field. The results are striking and quite powerful, enhanced as they are by brief stories of each of his subjects. The view comes to appreciate the real human impact of this terrible epidemic, the dedication and risks undertaken by the health workers, the exaltation of its survivors and relatives of survivors, the mourning of the relatives of its victims—frequently the same people.
