New York State is a major producer of maple syrup and Maple Hill Farms is a showplace of the process. Every March maple producers in the state hold an open house on two weekends. Maple Hill Farms is open both weekends, and a sign on the door indicates that they are open at other times, too. Call them at 866 291-8100 if you are interested in visiting to be sure of their hours.Maple Hill Farms has a friendly staff who love to tell about their primary product, the syrup. Be sure to join a tour of the boiling room to see (and smell, yum!) how the sap from the trees is reduced to syrup. You will learn all about maple syrup and its production.The Farms also have a showroom that feature their own products. In addition to syrup they also have maple sugar, maple cream, cookie mix, books, and maple coffee (which I am drinking as I write this). You can also purchase the components necessary to tap your own trees!On Maple Weekends they offer hay rides which are a hit with the kids.Maple Hill Farms is located about 45 minutes west of Albany and just a bit south of US Route 20. They are not too far from Cooperstown, Amsterdam, and Utica. It is an easy drive through scenic country no matter which way you go.It is important to note that the maple season is dependent on the weather. If it is too cold or to warm the sap will not flow and the producers cannot boil. We have visited Maple Hill several times over the past few years and even when they are not boiling to make the syrup it is still interesting and fun. And, yes, the syrup tastes great!
