免费海滩。好多人在里面冲浪。很多小鸟在旁边。旁边还有好多餐厅。一号公路我们这次的第一个落脚点。顺便吃了午饭。拍了一些照片。

On New Years Day, I went to Beach 119th Street in Rockaway Park, New York and took the plunge in the Atlantic Ocean with about 2 dozen peoples. This was the first, but not the last plunge I will take. There are some things on my budget list that should be placed on my annual list. HAPPY NEW YEAR

Coming from the UK, I did not know much about the Rockaways apart from this area is close to JFK. I presumed its proximity to the airport would mean it would not be a great place to spend time. I was very wrong about this - the beaches were absolutely stunning, and really empty (late September but stunning weather). Locals were friendly and there were some great independent eateries.

You pass through an area of pre-apocalypse high-rise and low-rise housing projects for the poor. The first person I saw was a young Jewish man (wearing a yarmulka) and then I noticed many African Americans as well. There is a large, modern and apparently well maintained Jewish high school nearby, the name in both Hebrew and English. Very impressive side of diversity that most people in the US never see. Next to the beach is the best public soccer field I have ever seen, with artificial turf, high fencing to keep the ball in, lights for night play, and even flowers and landscaping. The field was being used by 2 large groups when we passed by, and they were fully appreciating it. The beach and boardwalk are very clean. The major downer in the area is the very unattractive, grossly substandard public housing that should never have been built in that way to begin with. The second problem is there are no amenities and commercial services for beach tourists, like restaurants, street food vendors, bathrooms, clearly marked parking lots, etc. With such a large population nearby this beach is an urban oasis ready to be discovered.

From out of town, and we were disappointed to have spent the time driving to rockaway. Once we arrived, we promptly packed the car and drove to Coney Island beach instead, where we had a great time! No places that are accessible from the rockaway beach to eat, closest main drag is sketchy, Coney is much safer and has surprisingly clean sand.

What an amazing job city did to rehabilitate this beach after Sandy. I was there a year and a half ago and was stunned how nice everything looked this time. Nice sandy beach and is not crowded. What else can I ask for...

I'd gone to Rockaway Beach when exploring the Rockaways and looked to let my dog on the beach. They had a No Dogs policy which did not sit well with me considering the drive out here so I could only see it from the car. Upon examination seeing it with the rest of the peninsula, it looked dirtier and uglier than some of the other beaches in the NYC area. Overall it is like the rest of the peninsula, isolated, insulated, not easy to get to, with nothing spectacular or noteworthy to offer.

Rockaway Beach is the largest public beach in America and 150,000 people go there each weekend in the summer. There aren't a ton of beach bars, but try Connolly's in the summer or Playland Motel all year long. It's also the only good surfing in NYC which is a huge plus!

I love Rockaway Beach because it's well-kept compared to other NYC beaches. There are plenty of bathrooms every several blocks (clean bathrooms, too), and plenty of nice restaurants and food shacks right along the beach. Yes, it's NYC, so the water isn't going to be free of potato chip bags and whatnot, but for the most part, it wasn't as gross as Coney Island, and it wasn't as crowded as Jacob Riis, and it's not as far away as Jones or Long Beach. And it has clean bathrooms.

While certainly original to find a beach in a heavy urban area, original does not necessarily equate to enjoyable to visit. Good luck with parking and with finding your car still around if you do find a space. While long, the beach crowds are thick throughout the length. Rules about where to swim or boogie board seem arbitrary and hard to follow. It may not be far or hard to reach, Joey Ramone but it's not much fun.

Folks, I will be honest with you, Rockaway Beach is not for everyone. It's a mixed bag, which is why it is currently under revitalization program started by Mayor Bloomberg. Having said that, there is a reason that the program got started in the first place. Timeless things are the ocean, the sand, the sun and above all the air, which hits you with rich ozone as soon as you arrive. After the Hurricane Sandy a few entry points to the beach got improved, with new landscaping, cleaner bathrooms and nicer surfaces to sit and walk on. Of course we cannot wait for the whole boardwalk to be restored, to enjoy walking, biking, strolling and people watching. The ocean is quite clean, except for the stormy days, which can turn up sand and seaweeds. It takes a little getting used to, diving under the waves, as it is an open Atlantic out there, not a harbor. But those waves are a magnet for the young athletic crowd of city surfers, and several sections of the beach are officially designated for just that. So no need to travel far to get your thrill and chill. For families, there are small eateries right on the beach, but a picnic basket would be advisable, as prices quickly add up. Garbage disposal became better this year when the city added a few garbage cans on the beach, which tended to be few and far between. Still, if you think of yourself as a New Yorker, or simply a Citizen of the World, you would be wise to pick up your own garbage and take it home. It eases pollution, not only on the beach, but also on the bottom of the ocean, which is a very big issue for all of us. The beach is lacking in variety of places to eat and to stay overnight, though. Hardly any hotels or motels here, much less decent quality restaurants. But it is not entirely devoid of good eateries, which other reviewers noted. There is however a well stocked supermarket Stop and Shop at Beach 73rd Street, so you can pick up your food supplies and drinks there. Locals are a mixed bag. Many are residents of public housing projects, I.e. fairly poor, but some come from the up and coming neighborhoods of the city and from the brand new residential development Arverne By The Sea. You can see their advertising on the beach. Once the development is completed there will be a brand new YMCA with aquatic park for year round enjoyment, and a series of boutiques, cafes, restaurants and shops in the planned Tides community. Currently it is undergoing ground improvements to raise it above sea level, so hang in there. If you are on the market for a new home, values at ABTS cannot be beat, considering tax abatements, three months a year free beach access and proximity to NYC by the subway. This is what we did, and cannot be happier. Perfect for families, the young, the empty nesters, singles and retirees. Come visit and enjoy!

Go there every week-end during the summer....so close to home, free parking...we get there early & leave by 1:00pm as that's when it gets very crowded....very glad to see this beach is up & running it was devastated by SANDY......I've met some wonderful people through the years @ Rockaway beach & have remained friends.....I look forward to relaxing on this beautiful shoreline & dipping in the ocean.....they fixed up the Food & restroom areas very nicely......

I didn't expect a lot and it wasn't a disappointment. If you're in a city sightseeing tour in New York but you want to spend a day on the beach it's a good place but not for more! The water is great and salty (what a surprise!) but you can't relax because a lot of plane will interrupt the silence.

Per some of the recent reviews -- yes, there was quite a bit of damage from Hurricane Sandy. But it's been 9 months, and it has recovered tremendously. As a matter of fact, it's recovered such that our family of 4, including two small children, happily just rented an apartment a block from the beach and enjoyed a 5-day weekend there. Yes, there is still some boardwalk construction taking place (much to the delight of our kids), and yes there are some sections of beach closed due to erosion. But MUCH of the beach is open, and MUCH of the boardwalk survived. We stayed around Beach 90th, and we found restaurants, concessions, beach, and surfers to watch. Beach concessions: a small one at Beach 86th, a larger and wonderfully rebuilt one around Beach 96th. We stayed around Beach 86th for the most part, as the swimming beach is open there and further down for quite a ways, and the boardwalk is intact/rebuilt there. Though our kids insisted on multiple walks to Beach 96th concessions for the delicious frozen bananas, smoothies, and shrimp po' boys. Oh, and FYI, bathrooms and showers all rebuilt and cleaned frequently. And there was a huge staff there helping people navigate the parts of the beach open vs. closed and know where to find everything they'd need for a lovely day.Be part of the recovery! The beach is great, the area largely recovered, and the local businesses could use our support. Great place to spend a heat wave!
