Great historic castle on Long Island's Gold Coast. Wrote a story on this for the NY Times many years ago. Huge castle like estate up on a hill. Was a little shocked to what it is now a dog park.....doesn't seem fitting for the grandeur of the place, but just my opinion...
Grounds are beautiful from outside and fantastic dog park. Never been inside building, so only reviewing as a great spot to walk your dog. Everyone always friendly and picks up
This is a charming mansion-ette with a cozy atmosphere. The dining room we were in was too small for dancing, so the band was set up in an adjoining room. A bit awkward to get around the various serving areas.Staff was attentive and very personable - mostly younger people. Catered food was a slight cut above our experience at such affairs. Appetizers and crudites were tasty, especially mushroom cups and trecolore tortellini. Good prime rib entree with mashed potatoes and fresh veggies. Shrimp with lobster risotto got good marks, as did the roast duck. Wedding cake, dessert trays and chocolate fountain were crowd-pleasers.Lots of valets for parking made entry and exit easy.On the down side, the annual Christmas parade was held the day of the affair, but guests were not warned that the directions to the event would encounter a number of detours onto narrow, poorly lit and unmarked town roads. As the chateau is located on an isolated shoreline peninsula, some guests got so lost and frustrated that they went home. More than one no-show guest tried phoning the hall for directions but got a recording saying that calls were not being accepted. Shortsighted lack of concern for detail in my opinion. Might recommend for a smaller, spring or summer event when the grounds could be better appreciated, but this evening was awkward for many including the bride and groom.
CHÂTEAU AT COINDRE HALLThe building is a 40-room, 80,000-square-foot mansion in the style of a medieval French chateau constructed in 1912. In 1989, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places and dedicated to the Suffolk County Historic Trust. It is dog friendly so you can walk your pooch on the grounds and if you walk down to the water, there is a hidden spot where the dogs can romp in the water! Bring a picnic lunch and a blanket! Our dog was so happy to be there! It has a leash law where your dog must be on a leash, but there was no one around to patrol that(unfortunately). I did not let my dog off the leash for fear he would run away since everything is open. I was unable to go inside the Chateau because it states it is by appointment, but I will definitely go back with my dog. I can only imagine the inside! There is a small boathouse at the end of the property which is not open at all, but it would be fabulous if they would renovate it and bring it back to what it was. Definitely a place to return- it's quiet, clean ( I did not see any poop even with the large amount of animals there).
