I think that our guide could have been a little more well versed. She had a tendency to ramble and correct herself. Perhaps she was new. She was pleasant. The brochure said that the "suggested donation" for a family was $5.00 so my husband & I were expecting to pay $5.00 as we are a family. We were charged 10.00 which I am not sure it is worth (my opinion) and this put a sour note in my mind. The brochure said that individuals had a suggested donation of $3.00 so maybe we should have gone in separately and come out ahead $4.00?Go if you would like a pleasant diversion. The gift shop was very interesting as it was consigned items and they were priced very reasonably.
This was an unexpected stop while we were in the area having a late lunch. It was a small group tour, just us and another couple. Our tour guide was very friendly. She gave us the history of the house and family that lived there. She took us around the grounds (there are other buildings to see). The tour lasted about 40 minutes, and there is a suggested donation of $5.00 per person. Well worth it!
While spending a beautiful afternoon in Port Jefferson, my husband and I learned some history about this coastal town. We went on an informative and wonderful guided tour of The Mather House Museum Complex. The house and surrounding buildings were home to John Mather, a major shipbuilder, and his family. The property dates back to the 1800's and includes period furnishings, shipbuilding artifacts, tools, maps, pictures, clothing and such. They have a very impressive clock collection as well. If you are interested in purchasing antique items, they are for sale in the museum shop.
