This library is an outstanding review of the past century through the life of a great lady and senator. The library focuses mainly on Senator Smith with a chronological review of her life from the late 1890s to the late 1990s. Numerous pictures, quotes, speeches, and letters are very descriptive of her life and ours doing that period while addressing the issues of the day. If you like a review of the history of this period, this library is a must see. The library is all on one level and easily accessible by wheelchair. The staff was very cordial and informative. We felt welcomed and very much enjoyed our visit.

This is the home to the history of the Twentieth Century! It is also built onto and partially around the Senator's own home here in Skowhegan.Margaret Chase Smith was a Congresswoman and then a Senator for decades. She served through WWII and fought McCarthyism from within the Republican Party, was the first woman placed into nomination for President at a major national party convention and served until the '70s. This libraryn is very successful with records of her support of the military and the space program, as well as every day correspondence. Similar to many Presidential libraries but covering a greater span of decades than most. There are regularly changing exhibits to hold the attention of even the youngest of your tribe!

The staff is veryaccessible and will work with as you explore the 20th Century political scene through the records of the longest serving US Senator. And she was a champion of civilty, even when she brought down Sen.McCarthy in the 1950's with one speeech - The Declaration of Conscience which reaffirmed our core belief in the Constitution aand amendments that all people are equal even if they have a different thought or two. Wish the currents politicos could re-read her philosophy.
