We have visited this a few times and we will go back again! Good paths but some rough terrain...I wouldn't try to bike it but many people do. The views are great once you get toward the ocean, but the views along the trails are wonderful too. Beautiful flowers and birds, etc.
If you like nature and gentle, beautiful walks this is a great place to visit. My husband I rented a scooter and drove to Cooneymus Rd where we parked our bike and set off for a several mile easy, beautiful hike. We walked a large loop through and around Rodman's Hollow. There are many short paths as well. You don't have to go all the way around or through but if you do, you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the South coast bluffs and Atlantic coast. Breath taking. For photographers- this is a shot not many people will have of Block Island
We started at Fresh Pond, hiked from there to Rodman's Hollow, and then down to Black Rock beach. The hike is nice, though it can be a little confusing (ok, we walked in a circle twice), so we resorted to googlemaps to get through the Hollow. When you come to the end of the trail, there's an outlook on the bluffs that is gorgeous, and a rocky, steep climb -- with a rope -- down to the beach. As others have said, very few people come to this spot. We were there on a holiday weekend, and when we arrived there were 4 other people. About a half hour later, we were the only ones there. The water was calm and others were swimming so we took a dip. It's very rocky and slippery when you get in, but after that, it was fabulous. Really a lovely hike, all around.
This is a very special place. It's a pristinely natural rough trail through the native trees, berry bushes and flower fields of Block a Island that goes all the way to the towering bluffs on the south side of the island spectacular. Well worth the hour or two spent here. Go.
Very interesting if you like unusual locations. The bottom of the hollow is actually below the sea level with the sea being only a few hundred yards away. Watch out for the ticks and poison ivy and don't venture in on a hot day - the negative elevation results in an almost total lack of any breeze and the trees are mostly very short.
Great view from the road and the walk is comfortable and manageable. So wonderful to be enveloped in greenery and feel totally safe at the same time.
Of all the walking trails on Block Island, this is one of our favorites, as it meanders through so many terrains: wooded, open, flat, steep, and with great views of the island and the sea. Black Rock Beach is beautiful.
Rodman's Hollow is part of the chain of Greenway Trails that cris-cross the island. These trails start at the road, where there is a small parking area, and snake all of the way down to the bluffs on the South side of the island.Everything about this hike is just beautiful! If you want a longer hike, you can connect up to Peckham Farm and the trails by Fresh Pond, then across Gaffney trail and out to Payne Road. You can pick up a trail map for $2. at the Chamber of Commerce office in Old Harbor, or at the Conservancy Office on Weldon's way (don't try to navigate the trails with the free maps on the boat, you will be sorry, and lost!)Before you go to the island, look up the details of the glass float project. Hand-blown glass floats are hidden on the trails all summer as a way to encourage families to get out and hike. Even if you don't find one of these beautiful glass balls, you will have a great time to remember.
We did the trails through Rodman's a few years ago on horseback and decided to try it on foot this time. The hike was very pleasant on a perfect day. Not much else to say other than it was nice.
First time to the Hollow, we had an awesome time spotting deer and the most monarch's we've seen all year! We did two hikes and still never made it to the bottom of the Hollow, we have to return!! Hiked to the bluffs and then down to the secluded Black Rock Beach. We also hiked a trail or maybe a deer run not quite sure. The October weather was fabulous. Lots of awesome photo ops. Trails easy going, highly recommended.
Discovered this lovely walking trail to the most beautiful view and deserted beach. So happy we made time to visit Rodman's Hollow!
The trail through and around the hollow offers many fine views and a pleasant peaceful setting. The climb down to Black Rock beach is a bit of a scramble, but well worth it.
The Hollow has some amazing walking and running trails. Decent amount of birds and some deer to be seen (depending on the time of day). The highlight of Rodman's Hollow (for me) is when the trail terminates into Black Rock Beach. This is honestly the most desolate beach on the island. You will be lucky if three or four people show up during your stay. Great surf casting and spear fishing here.
My sister and I wanted to take a nice, long hike so we chose Rodman's Hollow. There are multiple trails connected together so you can choose a short or long hike. We hiked approximately 8 miles including all of the Rodman's Hollow trails and the trail connecting to Fresh Pond. The beach at the bluffs (Black Rock area) is stunning and there were only 2-3 other people there. We did this hike on Jul 30, 2013. It was extremely hot and I might recommend saving this hike for a cooler day. Take lots of water and a lunch for the beach. Bugspray would be handy too. Some of the trails are open and sandy but many are wooded. We had no transportation and stayed in Old Harbor. A taxi to Rodman's Hollow was $12 each way.
The area is beautiful. Lots of wildlife. The trail to the beach is an easy walk. They need better signage.
