The National Wildlife Refuge at North Point Lighthouse is one of the special resources of Block Island. The refuge provides a home to huge colonies of gulls - mainly great black backed gulls and herring gulls. During season, they nest in the refuge. Plovers are not common but there is a plover nesting area. And there are lots of other birds - several species of swallows, sparrows, yellowthroats, etc. Early in the morning, I saw seals in the water. The wildlife refuge is large. While you can make a quick visit to the area - its a half mile to the lighthouse over soft sand - and much further if you want to walk though the refuge. You need to stay off the sensitive areas - worn areas of dunes, the edges of dunes where grass is taking hold, and nesting areas of any type.Getting to the area is a challenge on foot or for casual biking. This is at the northern tip of the island - not a normal walk from town. And bike travel needs to consider the distance and long uphill stretch upon leaving the NWR.My favorite time is first thing in the morning - just before sunrise and when the sun hits the lighthouse. There is lots of wildlife early in the day, and even around July 4 week I was the only person there for more than two hours.

Beautiful spot. Don't try to walk here from the ferry as it is about four miles away. Went in October and it was beautiful and not too crowded. Beach is a bit rocky so wear good footwear.

This was a nice walk at the northern-most part of the island. We walked to the end where the lighthouse is, then past it out to the beach. It was nice - a beautiful day, but only a couple other people out there. Keep in mind, however - there are signs at the entrance about the dangerous rip tide, so no swimming ever. Still, it's a very pretty beach.
