As a student at Brown in the late 50s, I spent a lot of time in this wonderful theatre. Some of my favorite movies there were: "Diabolique" (I jumped out of my seat at the bathtub scene), "Wild Strawberries" and "The Seventh Seal" (early Bergman), and of course, my favorite, "And God Created Woman" (Brigette Bardot - 'nuf said). Happily, the theatre still shows off the beaten track and indie films, and the seats are still comfortable ( a bit worn, but ...)
Charming cinema right on Thayer Street, nestled in the heart of Brown University. Highly recommended!
The Avon is well-respected in this area and always has interesting movies to show, usually Avant Garde-types. Prices are reasonable. Can't say the seating is comfortable as the decor is old, but that's what gives this cinema its charm.
I saw a showing of Midnight in Paris with a close friend of mine here and never would have guessed what it would be like inside. The decor is awesome, the seats are comfy, the ticketing counter employees are friendly and wiling to answer any questions. This movie was not showing anywhere else so I had no choice but to see it here. It's right in the middle of Thayer St. so there are always things to do around the theater. After the film, we wandered and had a great time. It was only about 10:00 and we could still grab pizza at Antonio's. If you can't think of anything to do, I definitely recommend Avon for something fun and relaxing.
I love this beautifully restored old theatre in the heart of College Hill in Providence. The movie selections are always great, and it says feels good to support a local business that isn't a chain. In fact, the owner is often at the door greeting people.
Had a wonderful experience relaxing here on the final night of my trip. only downside was that bathroom was at the top of a steep set of stairs.
I would have never had the pleasure of checking out this Movie Theater if not for my friend Jay. He wanted to catch A Most Wanted Man on a Tuesday evening, I thought why not you only live once. Turned out to be a very nice night out. I had some time to kill so I took a walk around Providence that was very pleasant. After meeting up with my friends we purchased tickets and they have the retro style tickets very nice. The theater is very antique looking. The seats are very small. Luckily for us it was a Tuesday night so we could spread out a little. The retro style pre-movie notices were a nice touch as was the lets go out to the lobby jingle. The movie was really good so that only helped enhance the experience. My only suggestion to my friends was it would have been cool if we heard the clicking of a reel to reel projector. I'm guessing they went digital at some point. Nice way to spend a night out in Providence.
We recently saw The Lunchbox here. It is a film I couldn't find showing anywhere near me. I was visiting Providence and happened to walk by this theater and see the poster ad. I am so glad I did! The movie theater is very comfortable. I wish I had one like it near me.
There are few movies I've seen at the Avon that I haven't loved. You won't find your typical blockbusters here. Independent and foreign films are more what you'll find here. Love the Art Deco feel of the theater and great staff. You can even rent this gem of a theater for private events, which I've done. Fantastic venue!
The Avon Cinema on Thayer St. in the midst of the Brown University sprawled campus is a gem. It is a throwback to the old cinemas. They feature international films as well as one or two that hit the mainstream theatres. We rarely go to the mainstream theatres any more. They are surrounded by restaurants so it is an easy place to grab a quick slice of pizza or wrap and catch a great movie. A very eclectic crowd. Make sure to ask about the ticket package where you can buy a pack of tickets at a discount.
I love this movie theater. It is unpretentious, the seats are not amazingly comfortable, but the movies are usually first class. Lots of fun places to eat nearby. I am a regular. Buy the movie card if you are, too. It is a bit cheaper.
Old school, old fashioned theater that runs great movies. It brought me right back to Saturdays as a kid, sweet memories. The seats are not as comfortable as newer theaters, but the atmoshpere more than makes up for it. Great popcorn too :)
Nice movie theater that takes you back 30 years in time. The place have character and charm which makes up for the Uncomfortable seats. They don't play the mainstream movies but rather great Indy films. The theater is on Thayer street so perfect location to catch a dinner before the movie and coffee or drinks after. Makes it a great venue for date night!
From the moment you walk into the Art Deco entrance, you know that this different then going to the "movies". Here, you are going to the "show". Fabulous theater, with comfortable seats, large enough to be grand, but small enough to be intimate. Pick your movies carefully because they play out of the ordinary films and very interesting subjects. Bravo to the person in charge of picking the films. Worth the visit for an interesting time/date/movie.
Charming, old theatre with reasonable prices for admission and food. The Avon shows mostly Indy films which is wonderful. The only downside is the seating, not comfortable for longer shows.
