One if the many places we take out of state visitors. We live 4 miles from here and live it everyday!
Fantastic area!!Stunning scenery. Lakes, rivers, wildlife, waterfalls. If you dig the outdoors you will love this area. Fabulous photo ops.I recommend this area for camping, hiking, photos, huckleberry picking, floating, boating, and more. Then glacier park is just a short 9 mile jaunt. Truly gods country!!
We were staying at Apgar (West Glacier) and took a little side trip to see Hungry Horse Dam. The displays are interesting and the gentleman there was more than willing to answer questions. We very much enjoyed the little town of Hungry Horse and are glad we made the stop.
Definitely take the little side trip to Hungry Horse Dam. It is a gorgeous lake and a huge dam. We didn't spend a lot of time here but definitely worth the drive to see this spectacular lake.
Enjoyed many dinners here as it is close to town but off the beaten path. Nice little pond, picnic tables and pleasant trees. A nice change from local restaurants and the Hungry Horse grocery store is well stocked for travelers' provisions.
On our way to Glacier National Park, we took the side road to the Hungry Horse Dam. It's well worth the beautiful drive to the dam, which you can walk across and peer down over the side between the mountains. We walked to the visitor's center and encountered the loveliest park associate who was extremely knowledgeable about the dam, it's history, and the Hungry Horse area. She was so enjoyable and gave us wonderful information, but not too intrusive. She explained the various architectural drawings and engineering of the dam, including how the seasons invoke specific mechanics of the dam. Just wonderful! I thought my nephew, who is 16, would find this boring, but the park associate gave such detailed information about the draining of the dam that he was facinated by how it all worked. The area around the dam is also enchanting and worth the walk-about.
We stopped at the Hungry Horse Dam while we were in Kalispell. The drive is pretty and not too long and you can walk across the Dam. It is a very large dam and the river goes all the way to the Columbia. There are limited bathrooms outside the Visitor Center which are just really outhouses. It is scenic and worth the time.
My family really enjoyed the dam.. It's beautiful with alpha creek on the other side of it! My 4 year old enjoyed it most he just went on and on about everything from the mountains to the water to the tress! He said it's his favorite place!
We revisited the Hungry Horse Dam this year. It has been many years since we have been there. This Dam is the last Dam in America that you can still drive over, the information center told us. It is impressive to get out and walk across and look down. An engineering feat. Years ago you could go down into the working on the dam with a tour, now there is a virtual tour available in the visitors center. We enjoyed being there very much.
A second visit but this time the weather was perfect and we could walk across the dam to enjoy the views. The visitor center has a lot of interesting information about the building of the dam, lots of photographs, brochures, etc.
Since this is our third year to glacier we wanted to try a few more things. Our raft guide suggested this place. The dam is very interesting. The visitors center is small but you can grab a brochure and watch a film about the dam. The view is gorgeous.
About a five mile drive off Hwy 2, but worth checking out. There is a small Visitor Center on site that gives you the history of the Dam. It's about an hours worth of adventure, but worth the visit - very scenic. There is also a recreation area that includes fishing and boating.Would recommend.
Our family of four enjoyed going to see the dam and resevoir. It was recommended by our resort conciere. I'm glad we went. It was a short detour off of Rt 2. We got out and walked across to the other side. Beautiful views of the resevoir. We aslo saw a waterfall at the other side - alpha creek.Pretty waterfall this time of year with all the runoff. My kids liked yelling over the edge of the dam and hearing the echo. Something different to do. Interesting to see the history at the visitor center.
We happened upon this location and how pleased we were to have the opportunity to see the Hungry Horse Dam. It is April and we stood in awe as we watch water being released from the reservoir from three powerful jets into the river below. The shear size of the dam is worth the detour - 30 minutes to and back from the main highway including viewing time.
If you are visiting Glacier National Park, this is a must see. It's about 10 miles from the west entrance and worth the short drive. We have visited Hoover Dam and were expecting this to be a really small reservoir. We were totally surprised after the drive into the backwoods to see this massive dam and reservoir at the end of the drive. Drive to Hungry Horse on Hwy 2 and look for the SMALL sign to turn to go to the Hungry Horse Dam and Reservoir.
