you can not go in the light house the best way to see the light house is by boat makes excellent sunset pictures you can the light house keepers house at the museum
I love lighthouses and I go out to this area of the lake often and you can see the lighthouse but are unable to access it. The is a museum in town with history but I would love to get a closer look at it without having to get in a boat!
The lighthouse is not accessible by land anymore. They are talking about building one, but the lake keeps eroding the coast and I doubt they ever will. There is a spot that you can take pictures (great sunset location). Go to the very end of lake road to the coast guard station. Go west as far as you possibly can. There is an old sunken ship and camps down that way. Enjoy.
I like lighthouses, so it would have been nice to see it up close, to climb to the top, to see the view, and get a sense of what it must have been like to be a keeper or keeper's assistant in the early days. Sadly, and presumably due to vandalism, the light station's grounds are off limits with arrest being the immediate consequence. I had to drive several miles out to a so-called 'parking lot' just to be able to get a view from across an expanse of water. If there had been more time, I might have been able to get someone with a boat to get me close, but still could not have gone ashore. Pity.
There currently isn't any easy way to get to the lighthouse by land. What you CAN do is drive down past the maritime museum along a long road with a one lane wooden bridge past a bar and a boat launch to a burned down skeleton of some old bait shop or restaurant. You can see the lighthouse to the west across the little cove. Parked next to the ruins of the bait shop is a ghostly looking derelict tugboat that my wife tells me she used to play in as a child. Someone in the museum may know how long it's been there, but I have never stopped to ask. This is a unique spot, but probably not a great place for a picnic. Try Sunset Pier in Mandeville.
We tried driving to the lighthouse but the road was torn up. Road equipment was still on site. Call before trying to get out there and don't try it unless you're in a truck!
If you are there it is worth seeing, but I wouldn't make a trip just for that. Madisonville is worth the trip, but not just the lighthouse.
we stopped by the maritime museum on the way. got some info from them then went to view the lighthouse. it's a good bit farther out than i thought but we got some decent pictures with the zoom. hope you enjoy it too. btw it has just been restored and is really pretty. i didn't know it had a black stripe down one side until i looked it up on lighthouse friend web site
