My wife and I visit during the Memorial Day weekend to remember our relatives and friends who served. Some died the battlefield and were never returned home. We share stories of our families and walk the rows of graves. We offer prayers and tobacco to their spirits. The older part of the cemetery is very interesting. These civil war graves evoke some very sad stories. The more recent portions of the cemetery also give pause for thought.
The keepers of the Port Hudson National Cemetery were very cordial, understanding, and professional. They were truly wonderful. Though it was a difficult time for the family and friends, they make it more pleasant.
My son is an eagle scout and he has placed flags out with other boy and cub scouts for the last 9 years. This place is very well kept and I feel they do our military honors well.
The Port Hudson National Cemetery is located down the road from the Port Hudson State Historic Site which was the location of the US Civil War battle. The cemetery is easy to find from HWY 61, as there are signs which point the way. The location itself is somewhat unfortunate, as there are businesses associated with the paper mills next door. The cemetery was here well beforehand, but it is a sign of the times. There are two entrances to the cemetery, one for those coming for a funeral and the public entrance down the road. There is a office which is open Monday thru Friday, however the grounds are open daily from sunrise to sunset. There looked to be ample parking given the likely number of visitors at any given time. The cemetery offers a good opportunity to reflect on those who served their country from the US Civil War until today. Each war is represented including the Spanish American War and Vietnam War. The graves are located in different plots, but these are not separated by the respective conflict. There are also several monuments throughout the grounds dedicated to the US Armed Forces. As this is a place of remembrance, I would recommend spending as much time as you want walking through the grounds. Just remember to do it quietly as respect to those who died.
easy to get lost out here...poor signs...not enough people working there...not much information from help
A well done memorial; to our fallen hero's of the past. A bit off the highway but bone chilling cool to be in their prescence.
a beautiful place of remembrance for those that have "given their all" for our country - dating back to the Civil War - a short distance north of Baton Rouge, LA
This place is loaded with war memorabilia! You must go and check this place out. If you have kids in scouts - take them as a group. You will have a blast, literally.
We are here in Zachary La, visiting from Houston. Want to start our mini vacation by paying our respects to the falling Heroes here in Port Hudson Veterans Cemetery… This nation is full of heroes that have fallen by protecting this country; we honor them for paying the ultimate sacrifice. Thank you so much for your service you will be forever in our prayers and never forgotten
We stopped by the Port Hudson National Cemetery as we had known that it had some of the original confederate earthworks of the fortification of Port Hudson. This was established in 1866. The remains of many of the Union soldiers that fell in the battle were buried there. It is an active Military Cemetery with about 300 burials per year. We picked up a brochure there that gave a detailed account of the battle. We were unable to turn the motorhome with tow around in the parking lot but got permission to go into the service area to turn around. We then went to the Port Hudson State Historic Site a few miles North The address being 236 Hwy 61 Jackson, LA.
