How did they build that road over a swamp? How did you get from here to there before it was built?? Really something.
It's a long bridge that goes over a swamp. What else can I say? If you want to drive 20+ miles on a bridge, this is the place to do it.
Very nice visitor center. The docents are friendly and informative. Clean restrooms. As for the basin bridge--try not to get run over if you do the speed limit. Lots of rude drivers out there
I crossed the bridge at daytime and at the rising sun. It is a pitty you can't stop and take pictures, it is a beautiful landscape.
Truckers and idiots cause accidents and then traffic is tied up for hours with no way to get off and reroute. If crossing Louisiana bypass I-10 and reoute to I-20 (up north) so you can bypass Baton Rouge with it's traffic and poor Interstate design at BR Mississippi River bridge.
The basin bridge has some really pretty Louisiana scenery to see when you are crossing it. But beware, the Louisiana State Troopers give out tickets on this bridge left and right. And, do not speed up before you get off of the bridge because the are waiting for you at the very end to catch you excellerating above the speed limit before leaving the bridge.Be safe and enjoy
Be sure you see. Visitor's Center and tqke q hike along th swamp.Saw mqny turtles, but no alligators and a beautiful swamp. It is reqlly amazing how th highway with th bridge go right through the swamp.
This is a real nest bridge as it goes over a very large body of water. And it goes straight up and straight down. Neat ride!!!
The views are wonderful. It is a long bridge like the reviews said but to see what is on both sides is worth it.
Where to begin......Pros: Beautiful swamp/marsh scenery.Good access to fishing and boating areas at Whiskey Bay and Henderson Swamp.Good visitor center at Butte La Rose.Good access to Sherburne WMA (hunting, gun range & marsh areas).Cons: Firm road speed (60) - plenty of monitoring.Lots of 18-wheeler traffic - be cautious.Need more crossover or reroute capability in event of accident, can get backed up horribly. Some sections with limited shoulder areas.Only opportunity to reroute on bridge is at Butte La Rose north along gravel road to Krotz Springs - ugh.
For cars, that 60 mph is NOT a suggestion. There are several speed traps along that 18 mile stretch. If there is an accident in one lane, be prepared to spend the night. There is no where to pull off and wait it out.
Pros: If you enjoy driving and want a glimpse of what Southern Louisiana is like beyond the city and might have looked like a century ago, this bridge is a great way to show the family. The only expenses are those required to get your car to and from. Wildlife including alligators, many species of aquatic turtles, birds, beavers, nutria and other animal species can be observed during this drive.Cons: Ensure you've minimized risk of breaking down when traversing this bridge in your vehicle of choice; this bridge is unforgiving for those who've broken down. There's no shade, there are no facilities and it's a fairly long bridge.
Just wanted to add pictures to this and other reviews. Yes, it is a long bridge and only one exit, but take time to stop at the Visitor Center and learn what you are driving over, so interesting. Maybe you will want to take a swamp tour before you head off.
It is indeed a long bridge, but if you get bored, there is a great visitor center with information about the nature to stop and experience. The interactive displays are educational and the staff are informative. The bridge itself is accident prone with little other options to bypass. Traffic can back up for days ... Yes I said days if a bad accident occurs on the bridge. I had to go 2 hours out of my way south and around New Orleans to bypass an accident last month in order to go west to Mobile.
it's just a bridge! a very long bridge, but just a bridge. the views from the bridge are nice though, and there is a rest area about half way that is always clean and appears to be safe
