We took the ferry from Dauphin Island to Ft. Morgan on a calm day. We didn't have long to wait, but that might be different in the busy seasons. (We were there in Jan. and Feb.) It's a nice trip, takes about 45 minutes, and saves you the drive. You also get a pretty good view of some light houses. If there is iffy weather, you might want to call them first and make sure they are operating on that day. We only took the ferry one way; we wanted to do the drive up the east coast of Mobile Bay (highly recommended!) It also gave me the opportunity to go the outlet mall in Foley, ha.
Great ferry ride next to Dauphin RV park allowing both cars and people walking or riding their bikes access to Fort morgan as well as Gulf shores. Staff were very nice and made sure safety measures were known and enforced. it runs every 45 mins back and forth
Everyone needs to do this once. Was a little pricey at $20.50 for 2 of us in the car. Was interesting seeing the oil rigs and big ships up close. Was a little choppy the day we went, so might be a problem if you have a problem with motion sickness. Definitely can save some miles if traveling from Dauphin Island to Ft. Morgan area.
Our day trip to Dauphin Island was on of the highlights of our stay in Gulf Shores. We had bikes, so it was only $5 each, round trip. The crew didn't have much interaction with the passengers, but allowed us to walk around and take pictures. We got close to one of the oil platforms and saw dolphins on the way back. The weather was perfect, so that made the arrivals and departures right on time.
A great way to see the bay and enjoy all it has to see and offer, porpoises, rays, oil derricks, call ahead to make sure it is running and you'll have a great timePS Its a forty five minute trip, no bathroom, plan accordingly
We drove to Dauphin Island just to experience the ferry ride over to Ft. Morgan as our end destination was Gulf Shores. Ferry left very close to scheduled departure time and tickets were issued on board after the ferry left. Reasonably clam day although a bit chilly as expected. After enjoying the view for a while the wife went back in to the car to stay warm. The ferry passed fairly close to one of the oil rigs and with binoculars one could see good detail of the rig. Ride was fairly calm that day and lasted 25 to 30 minutes. Good opportunity for pictures. The staff indicated there was no bathrooms but there was a door marked for a men/women bathroom but I didn't open the door to see if that was the case.
I wish this were a great ferry ride - and the view is gorgeous. But as a local, I find that the service is unreliable and expensive. The ride across is about 45 minutes. Also, be aware that the ferries (there are two in service during the high season) do not have restrooms. They do take cards though!
We traveled round trip on the ferry from Dauphin Island to Fort Morgan and back. We drove our car onto the ferry. Buy a round trip ticket and save a few bucks. Just don't be late, teh ferry departs on time or very close to it.
This is such a great trip to take your children on. We saw pelicans , other birds and we saved money in gas !
It was something I set out to do on this trip. Its a long drive down, but I was not going the most direct way to come to think of it. There is the fort to see and the ferry was a neat way to see the bay and smell the fresh salt air. Getting on and off ferry was easier than I thought and the weather was perfect, but should be considered before heading this way.
My fiance and his Mom are from Dauphin Island, and he has the distinction of once having worked aboard the Mobile Bay Ferry, so they knew exactly what to expect. The ferry may not run on windy days or if the weather is bad, and if the tide is low, they will restrict RVs and trailers. It's advisable to call ahead or check their website. Once you're on the ferry though, the 45 minute ride is really relaxing. You can sit in your car, or wander around the ferry deck. You'll get a close up view of the natural gas drilling rigs in the mouth of Mobile Bay, and you're almost guaranteed to see some wildlife, we saw dolphins jumping the whole way across! If you want a different route across Mobile Bay, to avoid the traffic, or just try something new, check out the Mobile Bay ferry!
Enjoyed taking the ferry to avoid high traffic time in Mobile. Very easy to just drive on and pay while sitting in the car.
If weather is bad, such as high wids it may not be running. Also it may restrict RV's during high winds. Any of these delays are for your safety. You will see lots going on in and around the bay during the 45 min. ride. Rate is for a car and one passenger. Just a few dollars morefor extra passengers. Relax and enjoy the cruise. Do not blame them if they do not sail in bas weather. Phone first to check if they are running.
This ferry boat ride is a good thing but not reliable as to being open and the ability to get aboard. If you miss it you will have a very long drive back to the island or Gulf Shores. Best to call ahead to make sure it is running and how filled it may be.
We were touring the Mobile Bay coastline, starting from Foley. Went as far as Dauphin Island, uncertain of the ferry status, but fully prepared to drive back through Mobile. No other cars were waiting, plus there's no-one at the dock to help or provide assistance ... we did a web search and called the recorded message before convincing ourselves the 5:00pm ferry would run. Glad we waited, left on time, made the trip as the sun set, got a whole new appreciation for the oil platforms and traffic on Mobile Bay. Trip is 45 minutes, so it was dark when we arrived at Ft Morgan, but it's an easy trip back to the Foley/Gulf Shores area. Made a great end to a day of touring Mobile Bay!
