So I was sitting in the theatre the other day and up pops an advertisement for a comic store. The video was cute but I sat there wondering, "Could I have missed a comic shop here in Prattville?" A quick Google search pulled up "Quality Comix" and I had to investigate. I'm very glad I did. I took a little of my Saturday morning to take me and my girlfriend down to inspect this little gem and see if it was like "all the other" comic shops. Those that know comic shops know precisely what I mean. Old ratty carpet, white ceiling tiles with harsh fluorescents. To me no one really seems to think out of the box when they run a comic store, but this place...this "Quality" place does.Maybe it's the fact that it's in an older renovated building downtown but just walking into the place made me feel like I was really going somewhere classy. The old hard wood floors creaked, and there was an entire wall devoted to just new releases. Sure they had the boxes of all the classic comics, but it was nicely organized and it was quite easy to find exactly what I was looking for. There were oddities too, like a replica of the key to Superman's Fortress of Solitude. I loved looking through the entire shop gazing at all the little figures in the glass cases, even digging a little through some old comics to see what I might uncover. What set this place apart from all the other comic book shops (as if the old building with character and style and ambiance wasn't enough) was the fact the guy behind the register was extremely helpful. My girlfriend has been reading comics to her five year old for a while now and he gets really excited about hearing about the stories of Spiderman or Ironman. The gentleman behind the register took the time to not only help my girlfriend find some comics more suitable to younger audiences but dug through some of the classics finding stories that he thought this young comic lover might enjoy. That's quality right there. Just seeing that in action got this place epic points with me.So to finish out my girlfriend bought the comics her suggested and I made a decision right there to support this local comic store. I've always been that guy who hits up Amazon or finds the absolute cheapest way to get an item. It's just how I am, but once I realized that THIS comic store was worth supporting I thought it was about time I got myself a pull list started. Sure it was only one comic series but it's a start. When people lecture me about supporting your local game store or comic store I always scoffed because in the past those stores lacked character, criticized people new to enjoying comics, and generally were people I would never associate with except for the fact they run a store. This place is DIFFERENT. I fully support these guys and what their trying to do.So in closing, if you're tired of the classic harsh fluorescent rooms crammed into a strip mall then come here. You'll enjoy the atmosphere and you'll probably find something you can enjoy. If not, they'll help you pick something new out and even text you when your pulls come in for the week. Now if only I could convince them to let me run some Pathfinder Society events...but we'll see!
This place is great! They have alleluia of your comic needs and building up its collectables. They know what they are talking about and are alwasys glad to see you and help you
