Once or twice a year Huntsville hosts a stroll in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Some notable former residences of Huntsville's resting place are located here. During these strolls there are actors portraying these notables and you will learn a little history of the local area. This was a very enjoyable afternoon. We took our 8 year old granddaughter afterwards who said she would like to go again next time they had a stroll.
This cemetery is the largest in the city. Graves there go back further than the Civil War; maybe, I think, to the War of 1812. In spring time there is a Cemetery Stroll with local people in full costume who tell the tale of legendary Huntsvillians; there is also music. Many trees are in full bloom and it is usually a beautiful Sunday afternoon and a wonderful, educational way to spend it.
This Cemetery(the historical part of course) is great for a group to do some historical sightseeing. The grounds are maintained and easy to locate some of the local favorites. There are the old graves and mausoleums that date to the days of Twickenham.
This cemetery is a wonderful place, but the military section is special to me. Whenever there is a funeral for a Veteran, I hope to get the chance to stand proud with my PGR friends to give them the honor they deserve.
I love walking thru this cemetery, especially the older sections. I find it a challenge to locate all the graves of interest. So many unique monuments to see as well as historical figures. I visit regularly and always see something I've never noticed before.
My family and I were escorted by a gentleman native to Huntsville. Visited my own family's grave sites as well as those of the Civil War Unknown Soldiers and others. It is a beautiful place and well worth the visit even you don't have any "kin" there.
Great old cemetery where many famous politicians and governors and local dignitaries are buried. Wonderful in the fall when the trees are turning.
It's a very interesting cemetery. Tons of history can be seen and heard here. If you're lucky enough to be around in October, the local historical society puts together a cemetery stroll were actors and story tellers stand by influential locals grave sites and tell the stories of the deceased. There's no way you can make it through all the stories in the time that's allowed. Which is why I assume this even draws such a large crowd every year.
I remember coming here as a child to have Easter pictures made by the huge old magnolia trees. When I was in high school, my friends and I would come to take pictures of the beautiful monuments and carved angels. Now I come to remember the good times I have had here and the loved ones who have since been laid to rest in this beautiful place. Maple Hill is lovely and quiet, full of history, well worth a visit for so many reasons.
I'm not sure why it is always so crowded--people are dying to get in I guess. Seriously, it is a nice, old cemetery and very quiet and peaceful.
If you are in Huntsville when the historical Society does it's Cemetery Stroll (October, I think) be sure to take part. It's fun and enlightening to visit the different stations with historical characters talking about the lives of various folks buried there. It's a large cemetery with a site containing Civil War graves. I might be a little prejudiced, because I like old cemeteries.
Maple Hill is a beautiful place to visit. It is like strolling through the times. It is surrounded by beautiful tree's and each October they have a stroll there that you should try to take advantage off. They have character's that take through time as you walk through the cemetery. It is an amazing trip to be looking for kith and kin
Legends tales and stories can be found across the internet of this place. Check a few of them out: http://blog.al.com/strange-alabama/2012/03/dead_childrens_playground.html
If you enjoy a stroll through a cemetery, or not; this is a really outstanding place to visit! I like to go to read the headstones to learn about the people who lived (and died) in Huntsville. If you attend one of the special events held there, you also get to "meet" the many historical characters in the flesh while they tell their stories. Not to be missed!
