Fairly affordable zoo that isn't the biggest around but has well-cared for animals and enough of a variety to hold your interest.
This is one of the better run municipal zoos and worth the visit. The walking trails are easy to maneuver and never overly steep. This illusion of lack of steepness is a rare thing in Birmingham. The same holds true for the Botanical Gardens next door. Another must see while in town.
Not too bad I have seen worse. I didn't particularly care for the layout of this zoo, and there were many animals they didn't have. The Montgomery zoo is 10x better.
We came to Birmingham as a family weekend get-a-way. We've been a few years in a roll, so the zoo was one of the places we hadn't been. It was very hot, and unless you were inside a building there wasn't much shade. Do not recommending taking younger children on a hot/warm day. There were some great exibits though. We enjoyed the lions and elephants. We were not able to see some of them due to too any people inside the buildings(because that is where AC was offered) but what we did see was enjoyable. It's a zoo that is good to go to if you are already in the area and have free time, but not something I would plan a trip to Birmingham around.
Birmingham Zoo has some really great features. They are getting better. The better exhibits: Elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions. The primate house is pretty good, but a little small. The predator house seems small for the animals. The petting zoo is really good and the walk through the Alabama forest is very enjoyable. Having been a member for a couple of years, I can see the improvements they are trying to make. The Birmingham Zoo is headed in the right direction, and there is enough there now to make it a decent trip. If at all possible, pack a picnic lunch. If you take a family of four after admission, food, and a ride or two the price would be up there. There are several nice picnic tables to use outside.
We were members of the zoo for two years and made several visits during that time. It is an average zoo to me. Not the best or worst zoo that we have ever been to. It is something that the whole family can enjoy together.
Great to see all of the animals that I hadn't seen recently. Would like to go back to see the animals that have been added to the zoo since I have been there.
One of the few family entertainment venues in the city that is well ran and had been recently updated. They have seasonal programs to attract all ages that are big hits with large groups.
Very friendly staff & great volunteers. Do not miss the California Sea Lions show. Our children absolutely love it!! We always start with the show to set the tone of animal/trainer relationship. It's exciting & interactive. Feed the elephants & giraffes. Then go to watch the staff feed the lions. Really cool. The train is fantastic. Carousel is fun for all. Butterfly house & farm barn animal petting area is alot of fun. Take the kid's bathing suits for the splash pad & fountain's on a hot day is a necessity.
Love the fact that the zoo keeps growing, lots of activities to keep kids happy,I think Tuesdays are half price admission.
If you enjoy walking, the outdoors, and just being outside on a spring weekend, then you should go. It's fun and definately worth the trip. I find that kids of all ages enjoy going to the zoo. Enjoy!
We've been to a few zoo's, but none of the really big ones. With that being said it's pretty nice. Really big. The staff is very very nice. Get there early cause they have a lot of free tours or an some relatively cheap shows. Kids absolutely love it. They have several themed times of the year. Check their website. Have fun.
You might enjoy this with or without children. Well done exhibits and landscaping. Maybe one of a kind male elephant exhibit. Admission is a little expensive but Tuesdays are half price.
This zoo has several animals. It is big enough to enjoy in a day and small enough not to wear out tiny feet. We have a membership and it's well worth it. Go early when it opens to avoid crowds and that hot Alabama sun.
Birmingham Zoo is a bit small compared to other zoos. It is very good sized for a small city, and the whole setting is nicely done. Kids love it every time we visit and they always want to return back. It is a good value to buy the membership if you have kids who love zoos and live in the Birmingham Metro Area. Some place are fun for adults too. Personally, I love the Gorillas and the African trails.
