As a visitor of many museums of art over the years, I unfortunately was a little disappointed. First of all, the outside parking is not marked, one has to guess where to park by looking for parked vehicles. Once you pay, there is not a map of the museum available to guide you through the facility. I was told to walk to the end of the art displays on the first floor and then turn right to see another area that is sometimes missed. There is much to see on two levels and a map would have indeed helped. Also, on several art, the lights above which shine and show the art were burnt out. I have never seen this before in an established art museum; whereby, more that a couple lights didn't work and some artwork was in the dark. To their credit, there was an impressive special "Mardi Gras" display on the second floor, which may have used up available funds for maintaining the other works of art..
Really nice museum, with special Mardi Gras exhibits. We especially loved the room with MG costumes, but also enjoyed the entire rest of the museum. Taking advantage of free admission on Thursdays left us funds for a donation on the way out.
This is a very nice art museum featuring mostly modern art in the Springhill area of Mobile. Get off on Springhill which is exit 5 on 1-65 and it is about 2 to 2.5 miles down the road on the right. If you get to the black train engine you have gone to far, If you husband is a golfer there is a golf course right there and you can do the museum and botanical gardens which are also right there. Take about hour to do and I think it is a 10 dollar fee or so
The current exhibition is about the art and design of Mardi Gras and its history. A delightful stroll thru film, artwork, and the royal attire of Mardi Gras monarchs. A treasured history of this timeless celebration. But even after this exhibition is gone it will be replaced with another that is well worth the time to stop by. A great venue always.
Artwork was presented and arranged very well. There was enough space for everyone to enjoy without being crowded. Main exhibit was about Mardi Gras, which covered all aspects of the history and local traditions of the surrounding areas of the Gulf Coast. Wished there had been more pictures of older parades and festivities.
I'm not sure who said you can tour this museum in an hour. I'd recommend at least two. First, explore grounds. There is a beautiful lake and a bridge where you can bring the dog or take a romantic stroll. There's also plenty of free parking. The current exhibit is the history of Mardi Gras. Even though I haven't watched HBO's Treme, those were some of the most beautiful and decadent costumes I've ever seen. In the Mardi Gras exhibit, we saw crowns and jewels that were over one hundred years old! Also, some of the elaborate costumes, gowns and had trains that were twenty feet long! I had no idea how much depth, culture and history Mobile had to offer. There was also mixed media pieces and video footage for you history buffs. The museums permanent collection was wonderful as well. I saw statutes from Mali which were most impressive and exhibits from Asia and Europe. There are student discounts available and it's free on Thursday so come out and enjoy it!
art was below bad. local junk and a few minor pieces that I would not bother to cross the street to see.
The exhibits we visited focused on the art and apparel of Mardi Gras. The beaded costumes and artwork were amazing. The second floor featured wonderful exhibits of Mardi Gras gowns, robes and float documentation. We found the staff engaging and helpful.
I went to the MOMA recently to view the Art of Mardi Gras exhibit on its opening weekend. It was fabulous! The museum was beautiful. We toured the regular exhibit as well as the Carnival one upstairs and found it was very diverse and interesting. But, the star of the show was the Mardi Gras one. The Art and Design of Mardi Gras did not disappoint. The beauty and variety of the displays was very captivating. The costumes, the paintings, the set design elements, the photography, the ephemera. It was all very well organized and engaging. The laminated programs did a lot to explain what was on display. The MOMA really hit a home run with this one. Go see it while it is there!
If you are going to be anywhere near Mobile before May 5, you MUST see this exhibit. The Mardi Gras museum downtown is good but this exhibit (a few miles out from downtown) is simply over the top. Mobile Mardi Gras is different from NOLA Mardi Gras. This exhibit displays its unique traditions and the overall splendor. I think most kids would enjoy this exhibit, even little ones. It's very Disneyesque.
My husband and I went to Mobile for the weekend. We did not even consider going to this Museum until the Welcome Center suggested it due to the Mardi Gras Exhibit. There were lots of costumes to view, videos to watch, beaded artwork, accessories to looks at, and videos to watch and Mardi Gras. I enjoyed the Moon Pie cape in the gift shop. Military get a great discount.
We hit this museum on a Thursday which turned out to be their free day. We had a cup of coffee (free) and shared a biscotti (also free). They asked for a donation for the coffee which I gladly gave as the desk lady was so nice. We were in time for the Mardi Gras display of outfits, tiaras, scepters, and other memorabilia. A fantastic display! So glad we came. Worth the visit.
The Mobile Museum of Art is 50 years old. To celebrate they have put together an outstanding exhibit in conjunction with the Mobile History Museum and the Mobile Mardi Gras Museum. The Art and Design of Mardi Gras explores the many aspects of creative work required to stage annual Mardi Gras celebrations in Mobile. Mobile has 85 Mardi Gras organizations including 26 parading organizations. The organizations and their members employee lots of creative people year round. The special also includes a hall full of Mardi Gras Indian costumes from the Alonzo V. Wilson HBO Treme collection. The exhibit runs through Easter 2015 and is well worth a trip. The permanent collection of the museum is much improved and displayed much better as well. We certainly miss having a wonderful cafe in the atrium overlooking the lake.
While killing some time before my flight, I ventured into this museum. The pieces on display provided a a variety of emotions. Seriously, the small collection of religious art was very humbling, and the pieces from Japan and China were inspiring. I just wish I were in town during the upcoming Mardi Gras weekend-long display. It sounds like it would be amazing as well. It is set for November 8th and 9th.
Hell I wouldn't know but my art buddies in New Orleans who have Piccassos and Dugas in their hallways say it is a wonderful museum. I liked it better when you could have luch out there. It is right by the Tennis center so if you are here for a summer tournament great place to beat the heat
