If you're looking for an above average level hike then this is it. Lazy's 3762' foot summit is a challenge but it does offer some awesome views once you get to the top. There are two separate trails. If you take the Moose trail to the east, it winds around for a longer hike but it eventually joins you up with the main trail to the summit. There are picnic tables along the way but please remember to bring water. A light snack will help with your energy. Depending on your speed and ability the hike takes about 1 1/2-3 hours up and a little faster obviously coming back down. Be on the lookout for wildlife such as moose as we have encountered them on every hike we've taken. Good hiking shoes or boots and sunglasses are a must and hiking poles will help going up and coming down. The winds can be formidable so be mindful of that as well when you get to the summit. There is a parking fee required a the base area parking lot.
Wow what an awesome view! I have hiked many times and its never a disappointment to make it to the top. If it has recently rained be ready for mud
The first part of the climb is very steep, so be prepared. They put in a new "Lazy Moose Trail" that takes you halfway up by switchback. Stick right to use this trail. Plan on a few hours hike up to reach the top peak. Bring snacks and water. Once you are up you can continue accross to Byers (Matanuska Peak), of go down into the bowl and follow the McRoberts Creek trail down to the top of Smith Road.
Watch out for false summits they are a killer. Make noise for black bears. Stay away from Devil's Club causes blisters in sunlight. Bring lots of water and snacks. Great View but you will have to work for it.
I may be biased, as I live on Lazy Mountain, but the hike is fantastic. It is very, very steep and is best for experienced hikers. If you are bringing kids, plan on taking at least two hours to get to the top. The views are worth it!
My last climb up this mountain was just before snowfalls and when the sun was setting at about 5pm. I tried out the new switchback trail which is ridiculous. When one climbs up the mountain the switchbacks will not always gain elevation. It is nice to avoid the trail headed straight up the mountain though.
