We visited the beach at Demarest Lloyd State Park on Friday 8/25/14 and paid the nonrefundable admission fee only to discover that there was absolutely no sand on the beach. We later learned that it is because of Hurricane Sandy and the beach erosion has not yet been fixed. It was just rocks. There was no sand for the kids to play on or dig in. It was not possible to use our beach umbrella because we couldn't dig thru solid rocks to stand it up and there was no way to anchor it. Our beach chairs rocked under us because there was no flat place to set them up except on top of the uneven rocks.
This is one of my favorite beaches, mostly because it is off the beaten path and never very crowded. Great for kayaking also, but if the tide is out you'll need to carry it to the end of the sandbar to launch. There is a grassy area with picnic tables if you want to cook. My only complaint is that they close at 6pm (even on holidays), so if you beach, kayak and cookout they are asking you to leave just when you are getting comfortable! That said , come early and enjoy the day.
Has foot paths/trails to follow or you can walk out on the waters edge. If you come during low tides, you can take the family out very far on the exposed sand bars. My kids love coming here during the summer to take a dip and go "far out" into the ocean.
The beach is wall-to-wall rocks so this is not the place to visit if you want to play in the sand. However, the area is extremely beautiful with sand bars galore. We enjoyed walking out to the sand bars at low tide and searching for shells (there aren't many). The water is clean and the area is quiet, not crowded, and very lovely. We would return here again (with beach chairs next time). The bathhouse in the parking lot was very clean.
If you like a little peace and quiet near the water this is the place for you. There's plenty of parking restrooms and nice soft sand to put your chair in. Its quite rocky in the water near the stretch I was on but overall a good place to spend the day.
Demarest Lloyd is a very nice beach area in Dartmouth, Ma. No big waves ever as it is in a rather secluded cove. Lloyd is terrific for families with very young children given the calmness of the ocean. The beach area is neat and clean. The water is not loaded with seaweed and the area is not at all rocky. There is a daily use fee which is now very common at public beaches. However Lloyd is open to all visitors which cannot be said of the other beaches in Dartmouth.
Nice picnic beach and very shallow water for kids, not much waves but water is usually warmer here. On the left side of the beach is the mouth of the Slocum River and you can fish from shore for schoolie stripers or blues.
Demarest Lloyd State park is not easy to find. Thank goodness for GPS. However, once there, the grandkids had a ball. At ages 5 and 3, they could come out with us quite far since at low tide , the beach has several sand banks. So, after 30 feet of knee deep water, you arrive at a sand bank that is almost 100 ft long, then after another 20-30 feet, you will arrive at another. This gives the kids quite a stretch of water to enjoy safely provided you are within easy reach. There are bath facilities and showers. Down side? It is a natural beach. This means that if storms have pounded the beach area you will either find glorious sand everywhere or huge piles of rock instead of beach. If you want to see life in its natural beauty, wear sand shoes and enjoy this untouched area.
There are positives & negatives to this beach. Positives for some may be huge negatives for you. Depends on what you are looking for. There is a $7 state beach parking fee. Most of the state beaches start to charge after Memorial Day. This one has not started yet as of early June. Some park on the street and walk in, but it is a pretty significant walk to get from the road to the beach. There are bathroom facilities near the main beach area. There is a smaller secondary road to the left that takes you to a 2nd beach area. The water is fairly shallow with lots of sandbars. The kids can go way out & still only be up to their knees. However, there are dropoff points where it is deep. The upper part of the beach is nice sand, but closer to the water and in the water is very rocky. There are also TONS of snails. I thought it smelled a little swampy the day I was there too. The view is spectacular and there is room to spread out. Along the road into the park there are grills where you can cook lunch (charcoal only). Hiking trails as well. There were several people fishing out in the middle of the water, away from the beach, although they said they only had one fish between them all morning. In early summer the turns & plover are nesting so there is no kite flying and some roped off areas because the plover at least, are endangered. I enjoyed the beach, but would not go there on a day that I wanted to swim, as there just wasn't a spot deep enough for me to even get waist deep without walking VERY far & if I sat, I would be sitting on a ton of snails. If you are looking for great views, uncrowded, shallow water where the kids can splash & dig with TONS of water area for playing in, this is a wonderful choice off of the beaten path.
Very shallow water, great for the little one to explore. Rest rooms available. Plenty of parking and a shaded picnic area.
We used to go to Barney's Joy for Fourth of July when I was a kid. It was an all day event, packing up a picnic, bringing the jars for firefly catching later in the even and polliwog catching in the stream. We loved low tide to walk out on the sandbar, walking along the beach. 40 yrs or so later and the place looks the same .. that's good with me. Lots of fun, just as I remembered. I brought my nieces and nephew and they too had a blast (I know they'll remember it when they grow up)
Coastal pleasure. All seasons. Surrounded by farm and sea.
I think Demarest Lloyd Beach is absolutely Gorgeous. It has huge sandbars so it is perfect for little ones since the water in this area only gets between 2-3 feet (no waves) and the water is warmer. Terrific landscape and very serine. Great picnic areas too!If your looking for t-shirt stands, arcades and gift shops this is certainly not the place. If your looking a nice day to relax on the beach, then you found your place. Two thumbs way up!
We have been going to neighboring Horseneck Beach for years. As I was on the Horseneck Beach portion of the mass.gov website, I noticed a link for Demarest Lloyd State Park. It is a few miles away, so we decided to give it a try. We got there around noontime on Sunday. There were still quite a few parking spots in the lot. The beach is very narrow, with most of the area rocky and piles of seaweed, so it really isn’t great for a long, leisurely stroll. There were several families enjoying the beach area as well as the picnic area. The water is much calmer in comparison to Horseneck. The families that were there appeared to be having fun at the park, but our main reason for going to the beach is for walks, so this beach was not the right one for us.
