I used a "social media" deal for my first visit to this spa and enjoyed a wonderful facial and great mani-pedi experience, probably in the top two of spa services I have received. The technicians were friendly and professional and I would go back there again if the reception we received had been more positive. Just setting up the appointments it was clear that they look down thier noses on their customers who use these "social media" deals (I use italics because they constantly referred to us that way) and would prefer we just go away. Well, this is not an expensive boutique hotel in Manhatten, it is an upscale-chain hotel in a nice shopping mall, and the reason they constantly offer these "social media" deals is because they are not getting enough business without them. They are not going to pay people to do nothing, so I would suggest the people that run the front desk at Spa Epoche remember that all are customers regardless of how they come to use their services, and we should be treated with respect. A couple of the reception people were okay (there were several), but for the most part it seems like we were a bother to them; I should add the place was not busy on a weekend regardless of the "social media" deals currently offered.
Avoid at all costs. No wonder they keep offering Travel Zoo packages. From the get go the counter staff were extremely rude and non-helpful. They also completely botched my appointment request, and were argumenative when I spoke up about it.The actual services were ok, but again, the counter staff were horrible. They kept making us wait, exclaiming how busy they were, yet there were no other clients.
I had a http://travelzoo.com deal for Spa Epoche at Patriot Place. It sounded like a good deal $100 for a massage and pedicure. Add $15 for a manicure so I did. There was no one at the front desk when I arrived so I waited a few minutes and someone showed up and helped me. I shown to their tiny locker room with shower area for men. No sauna or steam room here that I was made aware of. I was given a robe and slippers to wear while at the Spa. It was a nice robe and slippers. I was shown to the relaxation room and waited for my manicure/pedicure. Elizabeth was my nail technician and she did a really great job. She took great care and foot massage was excellent. She is a very nice and I read my book while she did the pedicure. We had a nice chat while she did my nails. Really nice hand massage as well.The massage on the other hand was not good. I just asked for a regular relaxing full body Swedish massage. My therapist proceeded to give me quite the work over and decided to concentrate on my back and shoulders. By the end I almost had to ask her to stop when she used some strange technique of pinching my shoulders over and over again causing extreme discomfort. I checked out after my massage and when I told the person at the desk I did get an apology that it was not a good massage. I also was given a 25% off coupon for another massage which I left behind. I'm not one to throw good money after bad in the hopes you can get it right the second time.To sum things up manicures and pedicures at Epoche Spa are great just ask for Elizabeth & stay away from the massages. The place is a bit pricey anyway for what you actually get. Probably better off going to Boston.
Upon calling to schedule an appointment with Tiffany, I had asked if I could have a special style with a curling or waving iron since I had a wedding to attend. My hair which usually curls or waves very easily was resisting the process from the new iron and it seemed like the beautician was taking very large sections of hair instead of small ones. I'm not sure, but I think there may have been other staff members waiting for her attention as well. Perhaps that's why the iron attempt seemed a bit rushed. The end result was okay but by the time I got home it looked like I had a lot of hairspray covering very little wave. Most of all I didn't think it was worth the price to end up with a result that I could have done myself at home. The loitering of what looked like soccer Moms killing time didn't help the ambiance either. We had to ask them to move in order for me to take a chair upon arrival. The icing on the cake was that I had to wait a long while to pay for my service as the front desk was unattended. All in all I consider Spa Epoche a lot of fluff without substance to back it up.
We enjoyed a mother daughter spa day for my mothers bday. The spa is very nice and relaxing and had everything you could want...great relaxation room, changing area, sauna and decor. The services we had were facial and massage and both were great. I did have some difficulty calling and getting someone to talk with to make the appts but was very happy with the services. I didn't rate it perfect as I had a Groupon for $99 each which seemed compatible to other places I have gone before. Their normal prices of double seem high and I probably wouldn't go back without a better deal. I would recommend this spa for a special day of pampering!
I've been going here for a few years now and would'nt keep returning if I believed the Spa were not professional in all aspects. The associates are polite and well informed. I get mani/pedis from Liz all the time,and there is a new stylist,Tiffany,who is fabulous,(very creative and honest about what works for you! I had a wonderful facial today with Tatyana and I feel and look 10 yrs younger! Hope this is helpful in your decision to go there for a day of relaxation!!
I've visited Spa Epoche a few times for various services (massage, facial, and hair). Each time has been wonderful and thoroughly relaxing. I have used a Groupon here and I don't remember any problem with the mandatory tipping that a few others have mentioned. I am familiar with the industry practice of tipping based on the full price of the service. My most recent visit was for my hair styling for my wedding. I had my trial run with one of the head stylists, Katie. She also did my hair the day of the wedding. I loved the style she did, it was perfect for what I wanted for my wedding. My whole bridal party, including my mother and mother-in-law got our hair done here for the wedding. We chose this salon as the wedding was held at the hotel, so it was perfect to have everything in one place. The prices were actually lower than other salons in the area ($65-$100).
My husband and I went to Spa Epoche for massages, teeth whitening, and facials. We used a package deal from Groupon- two services for $100. Most services at the Spa average $100 each. Some of the services were better than others. When we went to pay, we were told that it was mandatory to tip 20% on the total full-price. That was $72. We questioned the person working at the front desk and she said that it was in fact in the fine print that the 20% tip was mandatory. After coming home and checking the Groupon on-line, we realized that we were deceived and that this lie has been going on for a number of years. I called the director of the spa several times over 8 days and she did not return any of the calls. She left a message after I told her that I was reporting the incident to Groupon and she was patronizing. If a 20% tip is what they want to require, no matter the quality of service (which varies), then they should include that on the Groupon like many restaurants do. Another complaint I have about Spa Epoche is that there are not other luxuries to enjoy like you find in other hotels. There is only one steam room and it's in the women's locker room so I couldn't enjoy it with my husband. There used to be a jacuzzi but it is no longer there. For the amount that they charge at the spa, there should be additional luxuries to enjoy.
Buyer BEWARE! I recently went to Spa Epoche in the Renaissance Hotel in Foxboro to use a deal from Groupon for 2 services. When I went to check out I was prepared to tip the 2 associates who provided the services different amounts in cash commensurate with the services provided. I asked the cashier how to handle the tip and was told that there would be a flat 20% charged and that it was ‘in the fine print on the Groupon’. This is NOT TRUE as there was no mention whatsoever of a mandatory tip of 20%. This deceitful practice appears to be a long standing ‘policy’ at Spa Epoche as I have found other reviews of Spa Epoche on Yelp.com stating the same issue (see Deb F on 9/14/11, Linda L on 11/5/11 and Wen L on 4/5/11). These other mandatory tip incidents occurred with not only Groupon but also BuyWithMe. Repeated attempts to contact the Spa manager, Kathleen Goggin, were ignored. I left 3 voicemail messages over the course of 1 week and NEVER received a call back. I would not recommend using this facility until this “mandatory tip” practice is changed.
Went last March ~ had a great massage ~ asked to focus on my neck, hands & feet but she spent too much time on my back....maybe she didn't hear me. But it was still good - come on now who doesn't love a massage !
Ladies, avoid this place! It is not worth it even if you think you're getting a good deal (i.e. a 50% discount)! My entire experience from start to finish has been extremely disappointing and frustrating (not something we come to expect from a spa trip). I ended it up spending twice as much trying to fix the damage that they've done. I am not sure if the management screens potential candidates but I can assure you that necessary qualifications of the staff and customer service skills of the front office are seriously lacking. Renaissance, you're diluting your brand by allowing this kind of unprofessionalism be associated with the hotel.
