As a former employee of the Greenfield Steel Stamp Company (high school and some college years in 1970s), which now houses the Museum of Our Industrial Heritage, I must say that it was very exciting and heartwarming to see what has been created here. A lot of love has gone into this museum and if you have any connection to the Pioneer Valley, and certainly Greenfield, you owe it to yourself to visit this jewel. The stories are fascinating and the presentations are very well done. I am proud to have personally had a working knowledge of some of our local history and I highly, highly recommend bringing your family to teach them about our-YOUR heritage. Five stars, two thumbs up and kudos to the curator!!
We attended opening day for the 2013 season and found the enthusiasm, dedication, and knowledge-base of the staff simply contagious. The Museum of Our Industrial Heritage brings to life the history of industrial Greenfield and the surrounding communities through their collections, photographs, notations, and personal narrative. The weather cooperated the day of our visit and we were treated to a walk behind the old mill building along the Green River, providing us with an even richer understanding of the place of industry in the Pioneer Valley. It is critical to look to our past in order to secure a vision for our future, which makes the MOIH an invaluable resource for the entire community. Be sure to spend a few moments at their wonderful website, meticulously maintained, for their online exhibits!
Telling the Important story of the rise and fall of the local tool manufacturing industry. Important to know and remember this story. Dedicated and talented staff here are doing a great job. Check out the excellent website.
This museum has a tremendous upside and with the proper funding and vision will become a destination one of these days. Their website is well-,maintained and you should refer to it before planning a visit. Here is brief synopsis of their self-description regarding the collection:"Our collection includes tools, machines, taps and dies, and archival materials revealing the social history of our industrial heritage. Artifacts from dozens of companies, representing nearly every Franklin County town, as well as Athol and several other neighboring towns, make our collection a rich source for understanding our past and putting our present into context. We also hold an extensive collection of photographs connecting our industrial history to many themes, reminding us that this story of the past is the story of people!"
