The flower show is on at Mt. Holyoke and it is gorgeous. Maybe this winter of unremitting snow adds to the joy of seeing the well designed gardens within the greenhouse. The sense of color -- yellow flowing into peach and salmon on to reds and back again; the pinks and blues and purples -- is heightened by the wonderful combination of the expected classics of the New England spring garden with unusual accents, some whimsical and others dramatic. The orchid garden and tropical rooms are enticing as well, but the spring flowers bring a lilt of happiness in this cold winter.Donations suggested. Parking free at the college. Lots of kids seemed to enjoy it with their parents and everyone was snapping endless shots of the riots of color.
The botanic gardens and greenhouse are always a breath of fresh air, but their flower show in March brings an early spring. The themes are well designed, and the flowers are just what we need after our usual winters. Be sure to watch for it next year.
When in South Hadley visiting your student this is a very nice way to spend an hour or so. The Greenhouse is a wonderful stop after a leisurely walk around the pond or on a dreary day when you are looking for an activity. The campus is beautiful and the Gardens and Greenhouse should not be overlooked.
This amazing Victorian greenhouse is a wonder to see. It opens up past the entrance into a lush garden of exotic plants, spanning a height tall enough to shelter full trees inside. There is a small fish pond inside, an amazing explosion of orchids, and in the early spring there is a flower show free and open to all. In the midst of a dark New England winter, it raises your spirits to slip inside and see all the beautiful plants and flowers that grow year-round. I feel refreshed every time.
The greenhouse has a variety of rooms including an arid cacti/succulent room and a room with a large water feature containing some stunning orchids and dangling spanish moss and hanging plant boxes which create an immersive tropical environment. It felt very therapeutic on the freezing February day we visited. We chatted with a friendly staff member who was in the middle of repotting a rather prickly cactus. The greenhouse is free (although there is a box you can leave a donation in) and open seven days a week. It is directly next to the Mt Holyoke College Art Museum and we found combining the two into one visit worked well. For people with mobility concerns there is handicap parking nearby. There are some steps up into the greenhouse but getting around with a cane wouldn't be a problem and getting around with a walker seems possible if there in another person there to assist with doors, etc. Overall we had a lovely visit. It is terrific that Mount Holyoke College welcomes the public to visit the greenhouse.
