Plymouth has a lot of things to see and a beautiful ocean view, but you are really here to see "the rock", which is actually just a reproduction of the storied rock with the date on it. In December, 2014 the Mayflower ship was not there (gone for refurbishing) so check before you go if this is a must-see for you.It appears that access to bathrooms, food, tours, etc are seasonal (meaning....not in the winter) though there are plenty of restaurants in town.
If you are expecting the big tour and lots to see and do here, this won't be it. It is a nice park, the Mayflower II at one side, the Rock in the middle and a park where they do all sorts of events, large and small. The costumed guides know their stuff, and are pleasant. They will engage and answer all your questions. The Mayflower is a paid attraction, but you can view most of the outside form the wharf. The rock is under a stone pavilion and sits right there for all to see and is free.
This area of green adds plenty of context to the waterfront are of this pretty town. The raised position if most of this area gives good views of the harbour area and is surrounded by historic houses some if which are museums but most are in private ownership. The various memorials in the park add further interest. Free and metered parking is nearby as are restrooms and you are just a few minutes walk up hill to the centre of this nice town with more historic sites to see a swell as lots of small shops.
This place was a lot of fun. Only probably was just not enough time. Could have stayed for several days and not been bored. I would love to return just to this place. So many interesting things to see and great places to eat.
The free tour departs several times per day and is excellent! This will likely depend upon your guide but ours was excellent. He was very well informed and interested in answering questions from the group. Took about 45 mins.
Everyone should see it. Beautiful- especially in the spring. The greenest of green! Very pretty, down by the water.
Yes it is a rock but it was cool. Probably because we were with Leo from tthe Jenny House Museum tour and we found out a lot we would not have gotten on ourown. The rock was almosr covered over by a pier! The rock was moved during the revolution and duribg the move split in half! Intetested? See the rock on the tour and you will have a better appreciation of the history.
Nothing fancy...It's kinda one of those things you build up in your head and then are disappointed once you see it. The park itself was clean. Nice view of the water but I don't think we would've been able to spend hours there even if we wanted too. There are a lot of other amazing things to check out in Plymouth. This is one that you want to see just to say you've been there but nothing to rave about. The town is amazing. Easy to navigate. Good for outdoorsy people, which we are. It poured the whole time we were there so our experience could've been a lot better, no fault to Plymouth, just the weather.
It is certainly worth seeing the Plymouth Rock while visiting the other attractions on Water Street - Mayflower II and the various shops. The biggest challenge is parking, which is limited to meter spots on the street and a few parking lots, but they fill up quickly, even in October.Located a short walk from the replica Mayflower II, it is definitely worth taking a stroll along the waterfront to see the rock. It is well covered, which provides shade on sunny days and shelter from the rain. From what I have read the authenticity is doubtful, as the Pilgrims are alleged to originally have landed in Provincetown at the end of Cape Cod and the original Plymouth settlement was located a short distance along the waterfront. In the late 1700's the rock was split in half and the top portion displayed up the hill in a couple of locations. In the late 1800's the rock was re-united and the "1620" was carved into it at that time.Regardless of the authenticity, its definitely worth a visit and photo-op.
We were visiting in September and it was a little warm. Between activities, we enjoyed the shade from a picnic bench.
This is a must see because this entire area and town is where America started. Plus, has many nice shops and places to eat too.
Separately, see the reviews for the Mayflower II and other attractions in the area. This applies only to the park, which includes a nice piece of waterfront and the monument containing Plymouth Rock.Parking can be a hassle on a busy day, but you might get lucky and find a space along the street at the waterfront. There are also lots nearby but sometimes they are full, too. The Plymouth Rock monument isn't much to see. Just a rock, not all that big, with an inscription. It isn't even where the Pilgrims first landed (that's near Provincetown on Cape Cod) and even the historic explanation at this monument acknowledges that nobody even mentioned this rock until more than 100 years after the Pilgrims arrived, raising doubts about whether it really has much actual significance. But still, it's a nice spot to visit and worth it if you take the time to see the other attractions in the area. Don't miss the Mayflower II, for example.
Definitely worth seeing. The parking is a little frustrating, and touristy shops surrounding the park steal a little of the history. The true story about the Plymouth Rock also deflates the excitement a little. I did enjoy the park, seeing the Mayflower II, and looking at the harbor. Actually I was more excited about walking up the hill to the location of the first church and fort in Plymouth. It could be (or should) be a little more authentic? Overall, I was disappointed, but maybe my expectations were too high, If you just go to see a nice city park with some cool history- that might be better.
Parking may be a problem but the park is beautiful, you can see the ocean and the Mayflower 2. Kind of sad because a homeless man was sleeping under one of the bushes.
We visited the area on a swing though New Englang. Arriving early we walked the area in the early morning fog. I enjoy arriving before the tour bus companies and congestion of all the visitors.
