It's a gem. If you get a chance to play it do it. One of the great links courses in this country. And during the summer they run a caddie camp, the last one in the country.
Greens fees not cheap but not exorbitant either. Course was in great shape and really beautiful, especially from the fifth tee right beside the Sankaty Head Lighthouse. Great walking course, pull carts available. I don't think visitors can get on during the summer, but offseason, there was no problem.
The venue, food and staff were all outstanding and made this a memorable occasion. We enjoyed the wedding ceremony at the Beach Club venue and the reception at the Golf Club venue.
Sankaty Head Golf Club is a private course but the public can play it before Memorial Day and after Labor Day. My friends and I just returned from Nantucket after playing this course and we certainly lucked out. We were only on island for 1 day and the weather forecast looked bleak. We took the Fast Ferry from Hyannis in thick fog and showers. However, once we got to Nantucket the skies cleared and it was a beautiful day. We had a 10:40 tee time and got to the course about an hour early. We were surprised (and thrilled) to see only 2 cars in the parking lot. The clubhouse is on a hill overlooking the course and had wonderful views. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and told us we could tee off whenever we like. We took our time, and my friend took plenty of pictures of the scenic views we were afforded, and enjoyed a leisurely round. On the back nine a couple caught up with us and we let them play through. We didn't see anyone after that. It was a great day and the course was in good condition. Although the kitchen isn't open yet, we were able to have a few beers in the clubhouse before taking the taxi back to the inn. If you're on Nantucket during the shoulder seasons you should consider playing a round here. The price was a little steep but well within the range I expected. This is very much a links style course as there were virtually no trees on the course. If you hit it off line into the deep rough you can have difficulty finding the ball and then playing it out of there. It's not a long course so keeping it in play will lead to a good score.
and dont forget to check out the Bluff and how it is eroding...but be careful has to be 75 to 100 ft straight down!!
eating brunch with friends at sankaty beach club with its vintage 1950's style--quintessential nantucket! one of the nicest labor day mornings ever with the brilliant blue sky above and the gorgeous blue of the atlantic below. food was very good but atmosphere rocked!
I attended a wedding reception at the Sankaty Head Golf Club. The event was everything it could be, but the setting atop a hill on Nantucket was breathtaking: mozzafiato, as the Italians say. I don't recall anything similar, except in 19th century paintings of the New England coast. When it came time for pictures, the backdrop was the Sankaty lighthouse and the gently rolling hills of Nantucket, leading down to the surrounding ocean. It was enchanting. I felt good just being so privileged to be there.
