There was nothing to dislike about the course. The views were spectacular, the course was well maintained, the flow of play was good, and even an average player can enjoy the challenge of this course.
This rating is directed at those who are serious about the game of golf, who appreciate a good course, and the condition of that course. This was our golf group's second year returning to this course. We had 17 guys play the course last year, and 26 this year. Both years, a number of us drove up from DC area to play a Thursday afternoon practice round before we played 2 tournament rounds on Friday, morning and afternoon.Tee boxes, fairways, and greens, all in excellent shape. Many sand traps were in pretty bad shape, hardly any sand in them. We were told it was because of a huge rainstorm two weeks before. I didn't say it, but my response would have been, well, you've had two weeks to fix them! Our group is a range of golfers from close to scratch all the way up to 36 handicaps. We made the decision to play from the WHITE tees - around 6100 yards. The distances on each hole were all shorter , so we asked the starter why and he said all the white tees were moved up to the GOLD tees and Gold tee markers were moved up to RED distance. The course actually played less than 5800 yards. We had some golfers who had not played the course before, and their ball was going into hazards at the end of fairways, which would not have happened if we were truly at the white markers. It would have been nice to know this BEFORE we teed off, but we were not told until Friday morning, at the start of our 2 round tournament and too late to tell everyone to play the BLUE tees, as they were now at the WHITE tee distance. Also, another gripe that should never happen at an upscale golf course like Rocky Gap, the hole placements were exactly the same on Friday morning as they were on Thursday afternoon.I believe the reason for this is they are understaffed at this course, it seems they just don't have the manpower for maintenance. All in all, the golf course is very good, it is worth traveling to, to play. Very reasonable rates and an excellent replay rate, which we took advantage of.
Course was in Great condition and maintained very well Staff was outstanding. They offer Active Duty Military rates but they should also offer Retired Military Veterans the Same rate
Gnats were terrible!! Everyone playing the weekend we played complained about the bugs. No amount of bug spray could stop these bugs. Too bad, because the course was nice.
a Jack Nicklaus course that was most interesting,The fairways were like carpets and greens large. The front nine were very scenic and different.
I have played this course many times in better weather and it is a real challenge, I have never made par but enjoy the challenge.I believe i have found more golf balls then I have ever lost on this course.
Greens and fairways in good shape, but tee boxes were horrible. Beautiful views of the mountains, trees changing color, wildlife and the lake. Very challenging course for an amateur like me. I really liked the course, layout wa a little crazy having to cross he road a few times. We did see the Marshall and beverage cart several times throughout the round.Would play it again.
The course's slope prating is 129, which is really tough for an advanced beginner like me. However, I didn't find there were too many hazards. There's not much water. Nice elevation changes. It was a very rainy and soggy day when we played, so I was impressed that they had a beverage cart. The pro shop staff were friendly and pleasant and the rangers kept a good eye on the course and players. Great course.
This course has greatly improved this year with the new owners of the facility spending money on the course. You need to hit it straight particularly on the front 9. The rough is very long off of either sides of the fairways. Hit your ball there more than 6 inches into the rough, forget about it. You will not find your ball and only if you step on it you might find someone else's ball. The par 5's are a challenge and hitting to par 3 hole from elevated tee is a thrill. The back nine is more wide open, but watch out for the gully monster. There is a stream running through several par 4 and 5's and if you hit there forget the ball. The course is well maintained and as a result most golfers repair their divit's and ball marks. Enjoy the scenery.
Front 9 is pretty much target golf. Back 9 opens up quite a bit. A lot of elevation changes but nothing gimmicky. Course was in great condition. Marshall and refreshment girl came by several times, which is nice for a weekday. Unless you have a very low handicap, you are going to lose some balls, but the course is honest. Fall foliage, 65 degrees, a cooler, ball and club washer on the cart, complimentary valet parking for golfers and a beautiful course. And I got a internet special for $17. Nothing about this place I am complaining about.
Affordable course with 5 sets of tees. Excellent maintenance and fabulous views at many holes, Play the recommended tees for an enjoyable experience.
This resort has it all. Its everything you would like to have in a resort. It has outside activities like a beautiful lake you can take the kids to. The place have nice people their to help you if you need anything. I took the elevator down stairs and went into the lounge were i met one of the managers. He took the time and took me around to different places. Rovky Gap is brand new. I am glad to be a new customer to. I advise everyone to go to Rocky Gap. Its not expensive, and you can WIN.
My husband and I booked this course before coming here using an online discounter. Weather forecast was iffy, so the friendly pro let us change our tee time to beat the rain. Because of heavy rain the night before, it was cart paths only, which always makes it a little more difficult to play. The fairways were suffering badly from some kind of fungus or turf disease, with many bare spots. The starter put us on #10 to start; we had a hard time finding the 10th tee from the range, and also had problems finding #1 from the 18th green. More signs are definitely needed!Fairways were generally narrow, and some greens quite small. All greens were in very good shape, except for many unrepaired ballmarks. All holes are within sight or earshot of the nearby interstate, but that's not distracting. The back 9 is quite open and flat; the front 9 hilly, with some beautiful views. There are many pretty natural areas alongside the fairways.
This course is very challenging as the first 9 nine holes go up into the mountain where the second nine holes come down to the lake. During our stay, many of the fairways were not in the best of shape but overall the course was good. Very friendly and helpful staff at the course.
Challenging course, beautiful views, but my guy licked the back nine handily! Service was great at the clubhouse, the turn and the girls on the carts were visible and had a good selection. They even went back and got us bug spray, upon request ;)
