The car in which the President was assassinated was added to the in which the Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated and the uniform in which Nelson was shot ... The Museum is small but gives a good impression of recent events.
The National Museum is not just your regular museum but one that holds vital information about the history of the country. A great place to take the children. The best part of the trip is seeing the Mercedes Benz Limousine the former Military President Major Murhitala Mohammed was assassinated in.
In all an interesting museum with historical artifacts from the history of Nigeria. Had an exhibition about the traditional life of different groups in Nigeria (with focus on the past of course). Very enthusiastic guide, included in the entrance fee, who actually told things that were not on the labels of the objects. At the moment the masterpieces from the Ife culture are not in the museum as they are on loan to other museums across the world as that part is being renovated. As a national museum it's a bit of a disappointment "is this all?", after all it's the national museum in the countries largest city by far! But it is still a must if you visit Lagos as it gives some insight into the history of the different parts of Nigeria.Note: the outside has a playground which is not recommended for children as it is too worn down, i.e. dangerous.
The museum exhibits Nigeria's ancient civilizations and traditional religions. You can learn more about the different ethnic groups in Nigeria. Moreover, the museum displays Nigeria's government of yesterday and today. Everything is labelled clearly but you can also get someone to show you around for some tips. This is not a European standard museum and you can see that few Nigerians have visited or know about the museum. Still, I think it's worth a visit as you can learn about some old traditions and see some local art.
