The beach was wonderful, very nice to swim and relax. Local vendors do try to get you to buy their food and therefore use their umbrellas/chairs for free or a charge if you dont buy their food. They are not as pushy as some of the other reviews seem to indicate. The shops do sell their products at a premium, but it's still nowhere close to what you would spend in any gift shop at the national parks in the USA. Lots of stuff to do in the beach, snorkeling/scuba diving or just relaxing trip on a small glass bottom boat. All prices are negotiable and you can also shop at the stores at the intersection of Pedro Clisante and Alejo Martinez.

this beach is beautiful. we walked from the condo we were staying in. the people were very friendly, and always willing to bargain. the beach was beautiful. soft sand and clear blue waters.

Loved the beds on the beach and had the best shrimp dish ever at restaurant on beach. Beware of the friendly locals they will haggle you for a sale. If interested, you can get deals on souvenirs.

Beautiful ocean views, shops rist with local items and tourist goodies, places to eat. Great foods at a great price. Places to relax in the shade.

This is where all the vendors sell their wares. It is worth the trip if you are looking for souvenirs. Everything for you is "almost free"...lol...There are also some restaurants along the route - worth stopping for a drink.

I read a whole bunch of the reviews before writing one of my own. My own perspective is as someone who has been visiting Sosua Beach with my wife for 6 years. We enjoy it and keep coming back. The beach itself is awesome----on most days the water is tropical clear, clean and calm, without waves or turbulence, but there are also others when distant storms can cause Sosua Beach to have some small waves and can cause the water to be less clear...maybe 1-2 days out of a 7 day week. There are some areas (very near to the El Batey side of town) where there are more pebbles. The pure sandy bottom is found easily, as you move toward the opposite end, closer to the Charimicos side of town. However, it is the ambiance of the beach that is the real draw for some people, which includes both my wife and me. We are among those who like to mix a bit with the locals, enjoy their music, engage in simple repartee with beach vendors, have a casual, friendly relationship with those around us---both other tourists and the various people who serve the tourists. We like interacting with the easy-going waiters, peanut vendors and foot-massagers. If you think you may be part of this group, you will love Sosua Beach. However, if you are part of another group---those who want a more upscale, private and formal beach experience, who would prefer waiters in hotel uniforms and and an attitude of complete polite subservience, to insulate them and pamper them during their vacation, YOU WILL HATE Sosua Beach. In the end, it's worth remembering that it's a PUBLIC beach, not a PRIVATE beach! Finally, I would be amiss if I didn't address the presence of prostitution. There are some areas along the long stretch of beach where young, mostly attractive and available girls sit together at tables, talking on their phones, laughing with each other and doing their nails. They also sometimes walk in pairs or small groups along the general path that draws a line between the beach and the small cafe areas, the beach shops and the restaurants. As someone on this board has said, "There is plenty of eye candy". I'm guessing this parade may be what he was referring to. Yes, the single girls are there, walking by in their bathing suits, but from what I've observed over 6 years, they are not a nuisance. They usually don't approach single men unless they are called over and personally, as a married man, I've never been bothered. They are simply part of the landscape---to be enjoyed or ignored, depending on your preference. I'm sure there are others who may have negative opinions about prostitution and are quick to condemn these girls because it offends their sense of morality. I am not, nor is my wife, one of these. But I can respect others, who would find the presence of these girls and the men who call them over, offensive. If it does offend your sense of things, Sosua Beach is not for you. Like I've said previously, "Sosua Beach is not for everybody!" However, if you like jumping into the mix of raucous Dominican families, sun-burned tourists from all over the world, young people, old people, middle-aged people, chicken-beans and rice washed down with ice-cold Presidente beer, Merengue and Bachata music sometimes playing a tiny bit louder than usual, peanut vendors aplenty and pretty young prostitutes on parade....which are all available on any given sunny day on one of nature's most beautiful and pristine beaches...take a trip to Sosua Beach and enjoy!

We were there in 1995 and I was a bit scared. My husband ( boyfriend at the time) was asked if he would like to trade me for a nice Dominican woman and we were suddenly surrounded by many locals not looking too friendly. Lucky enough our large group came along and broke up the group. This happened again at the airport as we were leaving. Will not go back. 20 years later and still have no ambition to go back .

We made the mistake of visiting the beach at about 4:00 and it was definitely transitioning to a sketchy atmosphere. I had one cuba libre that had too much rum in it to even finish and we left. Having said that, it is in a protected cove, with nice water, so it might be lovely earlier in the day.

Great Place daytime. Daytime - enjoy various restaurants, the beach and people watching!Avoid at night time! at night time the Sosua Beach completely changes character into a seedy "back street" with prostitution and overconsumption of alcohol and such. Avoid!

first, the negatives: the beach is thin so you have to wait for the sun to be high in the sky (11:00am) before Sunbathing.i have fair skin, so i would prefer to take sun earlier when the rays arent so strong.beach gets rocky as you begin to enter the water (it may have only been in that particular spot, though). not a big deal, can still swim, just requires extra care.People will come by offering massage, food. Around 1 every 10 minutes (not like Bali, where it's 10 people every minute). Not so bad for me, but might annoy others.Pay $100rd for a chair/umbrella. usually this is waived when you order food from the resaurants.Positives:Lots of restaurants/bars lined up behind the beach offering food/drinks/wifi. just snap your fingers and the 'waiter' will take care of you.prices are reasonable.Lots of toilets public ($20rd) or in restaurants (free).Lots of trees offer shade if you need it.Saw people snorkeling but i didn't partake.Convenient location within 10 min walking distance of most hotels.Preferred this beach to cabarete bc of all the conveiences available. Can easily spend all day here.

Love the sand, no pebbles, rocks, just clean sand. The beach is in a cove so most times it's calm. The colors of the water go from blue to aqua to wish I had more names for the variety of hues, especially when the sun sparkles off the water. The sunbeds are well attended as are the people who serve you if you want food and/or drink.

Sosua Beach is a nice beach with many shops and restaurants. This is a great spot to have lunch in the sun and have a few drinks, Great places to sit and just relax. Everything will come to you. There are a bunch of peddlers, but just shoo them away. I loved it and there is plenty of eye candy for everyone.

This is a great spot to have lunch and a few drinks, but unfortunately the bill came double what it should have been - a lot of add on costs for tourists

Beach was nice but the area behind the beach is all pushy vendors and a lot of prostitutes with older men

sosua has a nice beach with a bunch of shops lining the rim. I am a single female and did get harassed a bit (nothing too serious just cat calling). There are a lot of older white men with young women who may or may not have their breasts out. It's not quite the scene I want when I am on vacation but I guess they are on vacation too.
