A great quick stop to view the lighthouse and take pictures. It's disappointing it is not open to the public to tour.

Inside of what it was Ramey Air Force Base. Now home of Aguadilla International Airport Rafael Hernandez. Historic lighthouse well preserve by the U. S. Coast Guard. Right between housing is not and usual site for a lighthouse but made this one very unique

To get here you need to pass literally through the golf course. The road is unpaved and narrow, so I don't recommend visiting on a rainy day. Is not far away so you can walk from the paved area to the ruins. The view is very pretty. We went on a Tuesday and was almost deserted. I don't recommend going after daylight hours.

Next to the Aguadilla Airport. Punta Borinquen is the northwest corner of Puerto Rico. Here you can see the ruins of the Aguadilla Lighthouse that was constructed in the 1880's. The lighthouse was destroyed by an earthquake in 1918. Is a nice place to take pictures. The beach is beautiful but with big waves so you have to be careful. Near are some ruins of the Ramey Fields Military Base. At the final of the street is a trail to a surfing beach.

There isn't much to see or do....but it makes a nice stop to take a picture, see the surroundings, pass Maria's Beach and then continue on your journey. It is a beautiful, nicely landscaped and clean spot.

The lighthouse is nice to visit however, there is not much to do. I took my family and we enjoyed seeing the lighthouse but you cannot go in and once you have seen the old living quarters next to it, there is nothing else to see.

The building is best seen by morning light. If you are using a GPS, use coordinates to get there. It's only a few blocks from Rte 2. Coordinates are N18.4972, W67.1488. I was able to get good photographs through the chain fence but would probably ask the adjacent golf course for permission to get a southwestern view.

Punta Borinquen the original lighthouse was built in 1889 down by the sea. On a fateful day in 1918, the air stood still, the birds stopped singing, the dogs ran madly about. The lighthouse keeper, Francisco Cavallieri, was not concerned until his frightened wife gathered up their three children and began to run. The family just reached higher ground when the earth shook, followed by a hurricane that swept over the area, carrying off 30 of their neighbors. It's still possible (though difficult) to walk the ruins of the original lighthouse, but its hilltop replacement, first lit in 1920, is now off limits to all but U. S. Coast Guard personnel and can only be viewed through a locked gate.
