We have 2 dogs, and were initiated into this space by other dog owners - this is an old base, now some of which is returned to crop land, but is a fantastic space for running, or walking dogs, or just existing outside of urban space. Outstanding space. We have been there a few times a month for years and years. The area is divided - and BE CAREFUL - hunting is permitted at some times, not at others. The property is divided, so if it is a hunting day, you are warned. There are clear signs where the 'clear' area ends, the buffer zone begins, etc. I was there yesterday morning running the dogs, and was well into the marked zone - fine, because it was a non-hunting day (WELL POSTED) and heard gunfire, very close by. We turned around and retraced our steps. I have many times found spent cartridges on the non-hunting side of the "park". And as far as I know there is no one to police activity there, just common consent. Given the sheer number of shots fired that I have heard on non-hi punting days (posted) , I tend to avoid the property entirely from October to March. Out of season, our dogs, and many others, enjoy the opportunity to run and play on a giant and unmolested piece of property. I am so pleased it is being maintained this way, but wish there was more information available on boundaries, and some sort of active conversation happening about hunting
From an airplane above this wonderful woodland you can still see the original runway layout from the days when this was a World War II air training base. Now a great spot for birding in Spring and Fall, well marked trails and plaques acknowledging its origins. Note: keep your eyes open for ticks in August.
