I would strongly advise against going to Thunder Oak Cheese Farm if you are not able to access the cheese for life.....as it will ruin your expectations around what cheese should be. I'm not sure what else I can offer for a comment. Thunder Oak Cheese is simply the best.
This establishment has built a new store front and in the summer along with picking up some of their great cheese you can buy coffee and tasty treats. It's a lovely drive and the staff are really greatLots of free samples, if you have never tasted Gouda, this will be a wonderful experience.
Whenever I'm going to stop at the border I always try to make a stop here. They let you sample the cheese beforehand to make sure you like what you're going to buy.My favourite is the garlic curds
Staff is so so friendly..cheese is very delicious, can taste vefore buying..very clean ..sells other food and goods products..wished we bought more..
I like that you can sample so many of their flavours before purchasing. Their cheese will last a long time even once opened. We've had them mail cheese to us in summer and it still lasts well. Very flavourful, competitively priced and local. Can't beat that! I see sooo many restaurants in Thunder Bay that use this family's cheese in their food preparation.
Another place we have been driving by trying to fit in and finally made it. We were surprised to see they moved to a new location closer to the highway. The building is beautiful with a little eating area. They have only have been in the new store a few weeks. Plan to be making the cheese right there in the future. Staff was friendly. Cheese was good. Would have liked to buy bread to go with it but didn't see any but we were there just before closing. It looks like they have some good plans for the future and will stop in again to see what they do. Would love to see them making cheese have not seen it for years since i was in Holland. We have meet them at the pizza project in town for kids to learn where their food comes from and was great for them to show kids how cheese is made. Good luck in your new location.
This is a great place to visit with a really wide variety of gouda to choose from. The cheese making days are definitely worth too.
If you like cheese - especially gouda - this place is worth the trip. You get to look through a large window and view the cheese making process, the shop has lots of varieties to purchase and the people working there are really friendly. Best of all, it is a really high quality cheese and you know it is also really fresh.
Love this cheese. Every time we go to the farm I have to look through the window at the wheels of gouda and admire their goodness! If you compare this to the gouda from Holland, the Thunder Oak cheese is far superior in taste and texture. The different flavours are awesome and we plan meals around the cheese!
We went on a day they don't make the cheese. Not alot to see. You see the empty mixing bowls and the cheese on racks. It said they make cheese on Mon., Wed., and Fri. I would say go on those days other wise it's just a little store with cheese and candy for sale.
Enjoyed the visit, saw cheese being made and got to sample all the cheeses. Was definitely worth the stop and prices for the cheese was very reasonable.
Here's a pioneer on-farm processor who makes an excellent cheese. Hard to find outside the Thunder Bay area but well worth a trip to the cheese facility and farm next door, right in the middle of a fertile microclimate ideal for farming. The family is Dutch, like many of the farmers in the area, and they have brought a great culture of serious farming and entrepreneurship and a real commitment to the area that only immigrants seem to have
Some of the best cheese I have had. I love their garlic curds, best cheese ever. Fresh made on site. And the staff is friendly and the atmosphere makes one want to move out to the country and run a farm!
Thunder Oak Cheese farm is really nice. Last time I went I was probably six. The cheese is the best part, as they have so many varieties. You can get the cheese itself at the cheese farm, Belluz Farms (during berry season), the Farmer's Market (CLE ground, saturdays) and George's Market (on Balsam street). My favorite product is the cheese curds. So squeaky and tasty!
Thunder Oak Cheese Farm is located off Highway 61 on Boundry Road south of the City of Thunder Bay in the beautiful Slate River Valley and is a specialty cheese factory shop with a small convenience store specializing in Dutch items. They offer several varieties of Guoda which can be tasted at the counter.Kids are fascinated to see the racks of round cheeses.Make a day of it and visit some of the pick your own farms in the area and the Founder's Museum. For those who want less of a drive they usually have a counter at the Thunder Bay farmer's market.
