We stopped in here on a tour of a few wineries. It is in a very pretty setting on a hillside in the valley and you can either sit inside to taste or outside. We opted for outside so we could enjoy the view. You can do a tasting flight for $10 and get to try a selection of 4 wines which they set out for you in glasses and you can sit and sip at your leisure. The 3 of us all tried different "flights" so we could try all the wines. Very enjoyable experience.
It was really nice to be able to visit a wine making area so close to a city, but Coal Valley is only about a 15 minute drive from central Hobart. It is a peaceful place with views over the vines to the inlet below. Unfortunately, tasting were only available for about one hour a day at this time, so we were not able to do any tastings, which was disappointing. We did have a glass of the sparkling wine though, which was truly delicious! I thought the lunch menu was limited and expensive, and it was disappointing that we couldn't do tastings, but it was a nice place and I'd love to go back.
Fantastic fresh inventive menu. Live music. Nice place, sunny courtyard, lots of choices. Try the salmon two ways small plate! We also loved the warm beetroot salad and the chicken, date and walnut terrine. This had a lovely fig, apple and raisin condiment... You can purchase candied walnuts to take home! Also as it's a winery ... Plenty of good local wine.
Great coleection of tasmanian wine. 5$ for wine tasting and 10$ for Wine fight. My favorite is cabernet merlot!!
We visited the Coal Valley Vineyard for lunch & a bottle of wine. Although we didn't choose a Coal Valley wine, there was a good selection from other vineyards. We enjoyed two tasting platters and a salad from The Coterie. The duck platter was very nice, in particular the duck parfait. The scenery is incredible. Will visit again.
The Coterie at Coal Valley Vineyard has just opened after the kitchen being closed for a long time now.The Coterie is magnificent - delicious tasting plates that have such a beautiful combination of flavours. Candied walnuts, fresh cheeses, salads, meats, the best duck liver pate I have tasted and shot-glasses filled with cool soups. We didn't try the sweets but the menu looked amazing!Wine tastings are a good choice but they also have great coffee and teas. The venue is beautiful - smaller, more intimate and relaxed than other wineries in the area. Indoor / outdoor seating, landscape garden beds and paths, art work, large floor to ceiling windows and beautiful natural surrounds with majestic views over the vineyard and water.Friendly staff that take the time to chat - very welcoming. The kids took a soccer ball and loved playing on the grass areas near the vines. We will return for more...
We visited for lunch and enjoyed the breathtaking scenery. We had a ploughmans lunch and a meat plate. The ploughman's plate comes with hefty slabs of corned beef - perhaps this is a local tradition, but would have preferred different cheeses instead. We really enjoyed our time nevertheless - if they had turned the music off on the terrace would have been perfect! It kind of intruded on the peace and quiet. But the scenery and location were spectacular.
Dear 5th generation Tassie girl I am very sorry you were disappointed that the new operators of our cellar door don’t have byo picnics anymore but they are offering A LOT MORE. Live music, extended opening hours (9pm Thurs to Sunday) food, a great selection of Tassie beers and ciders and a wine bar. I still own the vineyard and am working harder in the vineyard to make better wine. Please come back we’d love to see you. Live music this Saturday from 2 to 6 pm. I'll be there enjoying it. Kindest regards, Gill Christian, Coal Valley Vineyard
Thanks Dave M from Hobart!

Hi Stephanie thanks for taking the time to comment. We are very glad you liked the Riesling - it's my favourite at the moment.
Sorry you were disappointed Yvette. We have lots of hens parties at Coal Valley Vineyard and certainly welcome them. We are a venue that welcomes children and adults alike and so we need to make sure what goes on here is ok for everyone.
Thanks Ponderous Dragon for your review! Feedback like this makes our day. We hope you can make it back. Gill and Todd
