My wife and I drove through St Helens on the A3 highway towards the A4 to return to Launceston. On the way through St Helens we saw some of the most beautiful coastline we had yet seen and whilst the drive from Launceston down the A3 was a very long drive through Scottsdale where there is a great information centre with Wifi the trip was well worth it. The beach and headland stretch for miles and the facilities for toilets, BBQ and seating were excellent. Also to be noted were the clean roads and beaches which were pristine.A trip well worth the effort and almost sad when we reached the A4 to return us back up the main road to Launceston.
While staying at St Helens,I visited the 2 supermarkets they have in town, they are both I/G/A but 1 is a supa I/G/A and the other is an older style, the supa market reminded me of Coles or Woolies. They carried a greater varitity of goods and services, but I found the atmosphere and staff weren't as friendly or helpful. There prices were higher than the other 1 also,I was quite surprised that the prices in the smaller store were much the same as they are on the mainland.
Great service, knowledgeable about local area. Able to handle bookings for attractions and local tours.
You can walk into the Visitor Centre, find pamphlets for the area, talk to the staff and volunteers, tell them what you want to do and they can help you with everything and anything, whether it is to find a good 15 minute walk, or somewhere to stay. It is up to you. They are definitely worth a visit.
Don’t miss this little gem if you want to know about the local history of St Helens and tin mining in the Blue Tiers. It will enhance your holiday. The visitor information centre staff were great; they couldn’t have been more helpful. The attached history room organised by volunteers is really a marvel for such a small town. There are working models of tin mining equipment and a model of the old mining town of Poimena – now completely vanished. There are stories about the town’s people and the trades they worked in. Best of all though was the film about the Tin Dragon. This film and the hologram next to it is in a tiny space in the history room but there is nothing small about the production of this film which provides an insight into the life of the Chinese tin miners who worked in the mines in the Blue Tiers. It is a well filmed, well-presented and fascinating story to take with you as you explore the area. Apparently it was all filmed locally with local residents as the actors, but there is nothing amateurish about the production. As you leave the theatre you walk through a section that tells the stories of the Chinese who lived in the area. The miniscule entry fee is more than worth it.
