Certainly worth the time to visit this mine and lookout. Spectacular view of the countryside from here.
An absolute must see for anyone traveling to Cobar. The sheer size of that mine and the information plaques will make it an experience you're sure to remember!
Good view of town and the surrounding area. A few minutes drive from the Highway and twenty meter walk to viewing platform overlooking the open cut mine. Not much else can be said.
My late wife stayed in Cobar at the Caravan Park on the way to Broken Hill in June 2014 and also on the way back also in 2014.We found the people in town extremely friendly and also the town itself extremely good and friendly. So much so that we have decided to re open the local Community Radio Station.Cobar deserves the service and this will happen and its not far away.Well done to Cobar and keep up the GREAT work
My 7 yo was fascinated by this mine pit. I'm definitely grateful to the mine for making it accessible to the young ones, I do not know of any other operating mine sites that have this type of public freely accessible viewing platform. The goats on the ledges were an unexpected sight.
Fort Bourke hill lookout is a beautiful place to see what happens in the mining industry, very interesting and the view is spectacular, especially around sunset
We went during the day and at night. The views of the countryside, the mining site and the night sky are superb. A must for every visit to Cobar.
Great view of the working mine - even from there it is hard to appreciate how big it really is until you see a truck driving down. There is also some information at the top that tells you a bit about the local area which was very interesting.
Have never seen an open cut mine before. What an eye opener. Worth a look as it is only a short detour off the main road. Feel like your standing right on the edge of the pit.
The lookout offers a unique opportunity to get close to an open cut mine. It is fascinating to watch the trucks coming and going. I just hope they fill it all in when they're done with it. Likely, not.
Not far out of town so it is easy to visit and interesting to watch the trucks coming into and out of the mine, but otherwise nothing up there.
The view of this hole in the ground is only interesting from a mining perspective - it is a huge ugly hole. It is however free. The viewing enclosure makes you feel like you're in a henhouse but that's so you don't fall into the mine. You can see for a long way from the lookout but you can't see the town well. It's worth a diversion to see just how brutally we treat our earth.
great view of the mine but a little of the history on a information board would make it that much better.
Having not heard of Fort Burke before we went for a drive to investigate. Expecting a fort of some sort we were blown away to find this is a magnificent viewing platform looking straight down into a working gold mine. Don't miss it.
Even if you are only passing through Cobar take the short detour of the Highway to this lookout which gives you a close up view of the workings of the open-cut mine and the reason for this town's existence. In an area which is mainly quite flat this hill also offers a panoramic view in all directions
