For such a small outback town Hay has some interesting attractions, Shear Outback probably being the only modern one which could hold its own against many city attractions. It is well put together and air conditioned in the main museum part. You just don't know what you don't know about shearing until you come here!We had no idea how hard shearers must work and the display of what they need to eat in a day was interesting and almost comical - would keep a normal person going for 3 or 4 days! The shearing display is simple but interesting, but it is the museum that holds the most interest. We had some scones and a few other things there. I am very fussy on scones and like a lot of real cream and they succeeded on these important points. If stopping at Hay don't miss the more historical attractions but this was a different thing altogether and we enjoyed our time here. Very educational if travelling with some city kids.

The museum area was fascinating & the whole project a great idea (with the exception of the circle/maze thing........ what a waste of space) BUT no shearing demo as the shearer couldn't report for duty that day, country-style morning tea & scones in the café disappointing as the staff seemed inexperienced & lethargically disorganised despite only 5 or 6 tables of couples to serve @ any one time - hate to see what happens when it gets busy during peak periods! Maybe we just caught them on a bad day

We managed to get here before it closed. Quite a drive from Adelaide. But do not miss it.We managed a shearing demonstation which the kids had a turn at - up close and personal with a merino! Nice coffee shop, decent souvineers, and genuine people working here, Make a stop.

Went to this with mixed feelings - what did I need to know about shearing and shearers. But it was fantastic! It has been done so well - and a great insight into part of Australia's history and culture that I hadn't been aware of. Loved the shearing demo, and all the info on shearers was just terrific. Highly recommended!

Wow This is a really impressive building that looks like it is sitting in the middle of nowhere.Great for kids & adults to learn about the history of the country and about shearing through reading & video. There is a beautiful shearing shed outside but there were no demonstrations on when I was there. If you are travelling with kids I would probably advise to check the website or ring the venue to see when the live demonstrations are on as it would make your visit so much more worth it!

This were you can find all the answers to so many questions you never thought of asking about sheep shearing. The display has some very unusual combs and equipment. The sheering show is awesome and a real must see.

The Shear Outback has lots of history and information in a range of forms; video, visual etc. There was a demonstration of sheep being shorn and the shearer was very friendly and knowledgeable. My only complaint is that the website doesn't have much information on it such as when the shearing demonstrations are. The demonstrations are only 3 times a day so it's a good idea to check ahead of time when they are so you don't miss out.

Have driven through Hay many times on our way to Adelaide but never visited the Shear Ouback before. Missed the shearing as it's only on at certain times. This was still a very interesting exhibit though. Very informative & a good video describing the history with boards and pictures for reading. A great one for families as well.

A very interesting and worthwhile visit. Adult price a bit expensive. Otherwise learnt things I didn't know.

Very interesting museum and great to see a sheep shearing demo in a genuine shearing shed relocated from elsewhere. Good cafe too.

A lovely well done attraction, the shearing demo could have been better with more information and more than one sheep being shawn. But the information and displays are very good.

Great display of the sheep industry and early Australian history. Air conditioned to help combat the extreme heat on the Hay Plains. Good eatery as well. Food in keeping with the ambience of the display.

We arrived late in the afternoon but really enjoyed the time spent there. Very well set out and the video clips were well done and it was interesting to see all the history of shearing through the years..

PatR1948

Good general display of the shearing industry through the time. Not many visitors when we were there. So got a good look around
