The cathedral is beautiful. Free entry, quiet and peaceful with amazing old paintings and a very impressive pontif--
Some days (or every day) the priest blesses cars outside the cathedral. They new owners of new or old cars decorate their car with flowers and other small things and then the brake a bottle of "champagne".
This place is at the TOP OF THE HILL so for most of us who are NOT used to high altitude is little bit of a challenge. Cathedral is like most of the cathedral that I have seen, HOWEVER photography is NOT allowed. This place is interesting place to visit during the morning as this is the time when people come with their cars to be BLESSED by the local clergy. It is interesting to see how they decorate their cars, vans and other drivable machines and all the rituals that they have.
The Cathedral is a must to see when in Copacabana. The building is huge and quite impressive. All the streets around the cathedral are full of street vendors, which makes it an interesting area to walk around.
The basilica is different to most designs seen in Peru. It has a moorish style and this makes for some nice pictures from the outside (non are allowed inside). The inside is elaborately decorated and worth a visit. Inside you will see the black madonna, making this place quite unique. An interesting spectacle outside on Saturday and Sunday is the blessing of the cars. Lots of people decorate their vehicles with flowers, top hats, streamers and banners.
The cathedral (I think they call it Basilica) is very big and its white facade is remarkable...the visit is a must in Copacabana.Inside you can find more about why it was sacred for the incas and other things about the Virgen de Copacabana.
We were travelling as part of a tour group and stopped here because we were slightly early for lunch at a local restaurant. We were thinking this would be a normal boring cathedral visit with over the top gold decorations etc. However we were very lucky in our timing. Just as we arrived the service inside stopped and a procession of the saints statue around the town square commenced. Four white robed men carried the saints statue at shoulder height around the town square stopping at the four corners of the square where the priests performed a blessing. This procession was accompanied by a crowd of followers (most in their best - and traditional clothes), a decorated car, a band and fireworks. A truly amazing and unexpected cultural experience.
If you visit Copacabana, you will find it hard to avoid going here. Be warned - The outside is better than the inside!
This one is special from the outside and the same as any other cathedral in South America on the inside.
The Copacabana Cathedral has an interesting history and is still very much in use today. It's not a super elaborate cathedral compared to many of the Catholic Cathedrals found throughout South America, but it is rich with history and has central prominence within the small town of Copacabana. Definitely worth stopping by for a visit when you are in the area.
A cathedral of spectacular proportions situated above Copacabana. Glaringly white in the strong sunshine. A very ornate interior where photography is NOT allowed (shame!). Not much else except the usual street traders surrounding the entrance to the site but well worth the short climb through the streets of Copacabana to see.
Just your average cathedral, worth a look if you're in Copacabana but don't expect to spend much time here
We didn't get to stay long as they were cleaning the floors, but the shrines and decorations were stunningly beautiful and opulent. Some of the cathedral has been recently repainted in bright local colours, which adds an eclectic and boisterous feel to the place. This is very much in keeping with the car blessing ceremonies which take place out in the street, complete with monks in robes and baseball caps, holy water and alcohol, flowers and fireworks. Not to be missed!
The energy and power of the place, the colonial architecture and the art work and all the dedication and thank yous from all the virgin followers
A huge surprise to see in the heart of this town. I was lucky enough to be there for the famous parade and the cathedral was covered in flowers and other offering as was the whole town. The local festival was brilliant and the costumes that the locals wore were amazing. The Bolivians very friendly and encourage dancing and singing with tourists.
