When you reach the pinnacle of this medieval village, you feel as though you can see half of Europe. The vistas are truly unsurpassed, and so is the old-world charm of the ancient cobblestone streets.
There are many towns in the Istria that are on top of walls but few have the walls as preserved as Motovun. As you approach the town and look up you realize the amount of work that was required by stone masons to build these walls, and as you walk around the bottom of the walls and slowly walk up the cobblestone streetsto the top you start to understand the magnitude of that operation. Unlike some other town walls like Ston Croatia you can reach the top via winding and climbing lanes. Once you are on top you can walk along the wall, an easy walk, and look down into the valley over the river and vineyards to the hills and other hilltop villages in the distance.
This ancient place with is small, but rich and the view from the top is breathtaking! In the summer days there you can meet some 'ancient' inhabitants walking arround and palys being performed. It was also nice for the children to see all that costumes. Also the road toward Motovun in the direction from Karojba is splendid, with nice view toward Motovun and vineyards, especially as we were there just before the sunset and we get few really nice photos. If you are visiting Istria you should visit Motovun!
You can't miss walking around when you are in Motovun; very easy walk, max 10-15 mins, and you can enjoy the spectacular panorama far to the surrounding area, and close to the red roofs of the village; perfect place for shooting photos. You don't have to pay for it.
The ancient city wall is easy to find from the center of the main square. A morning, afternoon and/or an evening walk on the top of the wall offers a fantastic view of the surrounding country-side and its wineries, Do not forget your camera.
Motovun is pretty small. We enjoyed the walk around the hilltop city on the city walls, which took about 15 minutes at a leisurely pace. It was quiet, and beautiful.
This is one of the best walls we have encountered in all of Europe. Just getting up to the top of the hill is a trip in itself. The wall has restaurants, stores, bars, and a hotel within it's boundaries.
Steeped in history with a very interesting political past.there are breathtaking views from the ancient wall surrounding the town. Buy the guide book about Motuvun (available from local shops and available in many languages) which is written by a local man and very well researched with fascinating facts.
Just walking over the walls is a pleasure. Nice homes on one side, great valley views on the other. One get a sense of what was it living in this walled city hundreds of years ago.
Fantastic walkway along the city walls with stunning views of the valleys and canal, and the truffle forests. What Motovun is all about. Don't miss it!
As in my review a walled city on a high hill that was wonderful to visit. Great views . The walled city was smaller than most and I think that added to its charm. Surrounding countryside very green and full of grape vineyards. It is a long climb to the top.
This is such a gorgeous view. We strolled past the restaurant patio eating area resting along the wall. The breeze and the view made for a nice place to stop.
It´s a beautiful old city on a hill where you can walk and relax. Do not forget to visit the church and the market. We can spent a day to visit this beautiful day.
on the hill, with amazing view on a valley. We walked around the city on the city walls and that was something. I liked it a lot. It is very preserved medievel town
well maintained, narrow streets, city walls very pretty! Parking is hard here unless you are staying within the town.
