A wonderful insight into Cretan culture..A museum with plenty to see and a warm welcome from the staff..Easy to find and a very pleasant few hours reading and trying to get a feel for the "real" Crete..We do tend to read as much as we can..!!!Inexpensive with a small snack bar type restaurant that provides traditional Greek food..Great value for money..Site consists of a small school room ,church , manor house and gardens and even an old type potting shed complete with garden implements..!!!Also a purpose built meeting room which is also used for educational visits.

After being thoroughly confused whilst paying (one person swapping with another, and neither knowing that we'd paid) the museum was interesting, with enough english information to get the gist of things. Enjoyed stomping grapes and trying traditional foods, though be aware that there is no air-con throughout the site.

You'll find this museum at the end of the strip of shops/restaurants in Hersonissos just past Star Beach Water Park. It is open air so you can still enjoy the sunshine as you have a walk around the well laid out museum which has displays of local gardens, traditional village house and contents, small church and tools and other items that would have been found in a traditional Crete house/farm. Good value at 6 euros. I didn't use it but there was a small cafe within the grounds as well and you can also access the beach from here. Takes about an hour to get around or you can also enjoy some time on the beach just behind the museum.

Such lovely views and so much detail, I loved it there. I learnt loads more about Crete in 90 minutes than I did the rest of my holiday.

Very nice museum had the option for a small cost to see a film and have audio narration.Well worth a visit quite a bit to see depending on the way you want your visit to be.You could spend a few hours there as on a Wednesday they were doing grape treading and traditional crafts or if short of time you could have a quick visit we enjoyed our s.

We went for the grape pressing etc, costing us 12 Euros each. As experienced by others, this was interesting and we got wine (rough), hot potatoes (good), apple syrup (very nice), fresh figs & cheese pasties (delicious), plus some raki (heh!).There was a background film, which was interesting, and the cretan house was great. However, some of the other displays were tired and need maintaining.All-in-all 10 for effort, 6 for achievement. The place shows that it was built and run on a shoe-string, despite the hefty entrance fee.

We loved the audio tour and being able to wander about and find the various areas the audio tour and map suggested to go to next, and the audio tour was clear and had lots of little info nuggets as well as the main thing it was talking about. There was plenty of shade, it was a very hot day, and the cafe at the end made us feel very welcome.Dislikes? I can't think of a single thing.

A small but well-cared for open-air museum showing aspects of traditional life on Crete in times past. Decently organised and set-up. Maybe a little tired-looking in places but this just adds to the charm of the place. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Interesting museum showing different aspects of rural life in the past. The owner certainly had a great vision in building this place.Audioguide didn't add much information, but it was only 1€ to hire.Nice cafe.

We've just returned from an enjoyable holiday in Crete, where we visited Lychnostatis on 15/10/14. We chose a Wednesday to visit as there promised to be many extras due to the weekly 'Grape Festival'. It did not disappoint! Although the usual entry fee of 5 euros increases to 12 for this day it was well worth it. Samples of wine, a cinnamon drink and greek firewater were given out, as were tasters of different types of food.So much in fact we didn't have to buy lunch! The staff put on a lengthy display of greek dancing which everyone was encouraged to join in. The tour of the village itself was very interesting and informative with the help of an audio guide so we could make our own way round. A short film explained how conservation played a huge part in building this amazing attraction. It is best to spend the whole opening time there, 9:00 till 14:00. A definite must-see!

We went here on the last morning of our holiday so only had a couple of hours before we had to catch the coach to the airport. You really need to allow yourselves a lot longer and pay for the audio tapes which you can take round with you and will explain what you are looking at!! We will go back next time we are staying in the area.
