Lovely beach, always clean and litter free. About 1.5 miles in length. Can sometimes watch the surfers, stand up paddlers and kite surfers. Great on a cloudy or a sunny day!
this beach looked excellent place to take our dog for a walk on during your visit to Dunbar. However we couldn't cross the bridge as the main part of it is made of a metal grate which our dog couldn't walk on as sore on her paws.
wonderful sandy beach that stretches for about half a mile, with lots of shells to collect and a great place to take the dog for a walk. People ride on the beach and there is a surf school in the summer months. there is a sand bar behind which the dunes collect salt water at high tide a haven for many birds and salt loving animals although it is extensively walked by many people it is seldom over populated probably as it can be very windy. Magical spot though.
First Visited August 2013 and several times since, most recent in June 2014Bellhaven Beach is just outside of Dunbar on the East coast of Scotland. It’s easy enough to reach using your sat nav because there is a kids adventure playground nearby which gives you a postcode. I would, however, check an online map before you go just so you can see what the road looks like so you don’t get lost. When you get there there is ample parking around the site which is located a short walk from the beach. From the parking there are toilets fairly close by as well. The walk to the beach is fairly short and well marked so you should have no problems finding your way.The beach itself is huge so you can spend hours walking there. The sand is quite fine, so much so that in the wind it can be quite sore when its being blown against your legs (the wind can be quite strong there). The sand is good quality along the whole beach. The water is clean and there is no obvious debris along the beach which is always a good thing. One thing of particular note about the water, be careful. I had a very unfortunate experience swimming there because the tides are much stronger than they appear.
Once you're on the beach this is magical.Wonderful place to be and you can walk as little or as much as you like.Clean and safe too.Only downside is the awful bridge you have to go over to cross over the river which flows onto the beach - it's horrible anyway for humans, steep and awkward - even worse if you have a dog who is freaked out by the holes in the metal they have to walk over (and they hurt her dodgy hip. - didn't do much for mine).
I am blessed to live so close to this beach - one of several around DunbarThis one is unique in it's size and it's permanent 'river' feature - you cross a bridge, known as 'the bridge to nowhere' and is possibly one of the most photographed sites in the area, to get to the main beach or of course you can splash right through if you prefer! This gets you to the main beach which is vast - miles of white sands used by walkers, dog walkers, horse riders, families and surfers and in all weathers!Parking closeby and easy access to the John Muir Way. Be aware that the tide can come in faster than you realise and it does so in a pincer type movement - so can cut off the bridge before the rest of the beach. Means you can find yourself on the main beach with still lots of sand around but unable to get back over the bridge. Don't let that stop a visit - just keep your eyes open!As I said, I am blessed!
Even in February it was great just to sit and watch the tide come in. So relaxing. So easy to walk there from Dunbar.
Beautiful sandy beach and plenty of cliff top walks leading to a lovely little fishing harbour. Lots of shops and cafe's and award winning public toilets. Dunbar has it all.
The beach is access from a free car park on the west side of Dunbar. A river separates the car park from the beach. There’s a footbridge over the river, or you can paddle through it. The river bed and banks are stony but from then onwards it’s about two miles of sand: loads and loads of it. The beach is backed by low sand dunes. We arrived just as the local school was setting up a PE lesson on the beach. Can’t be many schools that do that. There was about 100 children from the school but they took up a tiny fraction of the beach. There were about 20 odd dog walkers but they were dots here and there. It is vast. Plenty of space. We visited on a very hot day in June. Despite the heat there were very few bathers. Most people were walking the length of the beach.
I'll confess that we had never heard of Belhaven Beach until we visited in November 2014. The beach is about two miles long and on the day we visited there was hardly a soul on it. The dog absolutely loved the walk and we will return the next time we are in the area. I'll remember my trainers next time though as the sand is fairly hard packed and it would be great to run along and back.
You can walk two miles along this beach - but bear in mind that it is two miles back again as well. You will see very few people on the beach even in high season. Birdwatching on the adjacent saltings is superb. There is a coastal path round the edge of a golf course into central Dunbar which is stunning - and refreshing. Not for small children, though, as parts are close to steep though not particularly high cliffs. Well worth a visit. Good place for a picnic.
Saw the beach during a hot sunny spell.... magic - could have been anywhere in Europe. Some picnic benches to sit and take in the view.
This is an un spoilt part of the world and the beach is beautiful what ever the weather. Walk, collect shells, surf or just breathe in the sea air and admire the views.
A great destination for all wether you are a local or a visitor. A great run to the beach from town to the estuary and back. Drive and park your car, good amount of parking. Good facilities from toilets to showers and pet requirements. Great to see all the dogs enjoying big runs.Kite surfing, surfing, picnics, families. Bring a wind break, wellingtons, wetsuit or sweater depending on your activity.
Beautiful big beach was spectacular and we thoroughly enjoyed walking/running around on it. Plenty of parking and an incredible beach to wander around, definitely somewhere to go on a trip to Dunbar!
